IBD is not “just acidity” or a simple stomach problem.
Many patients live with fear, confusion, and myths surrounding the disease. Let’s clear a few common misconceptions on this :
🔹 “IBD happens because of spicy food.”
No. IBD is an immune-mediated disease. Food may trigger symptoms, but it is not the root cause.
🔹 “IBD is the same as IBS.”
Not true. IBS is a functional disorder, while IBD causes real inflammation and damage inside the intestine.
🔹 “If symptoms improve, medicines can be stopped.”
Wrong. Stopping medicines on your own is one of the commonest reasons for flare-ups.
🔹 “Steroids are the main long-term treatment.”
Steroids are usually for short-term control. Long-term management focuses on safer maintenance therapies.
🔹 “IBD means surgery is inevitable.”
Many patients live a normal life for years with proper treatment and follow-up.
🔹 “People with IBD cannot work, travel, marry, or have children.”
Absolutely false. With good disease control, most patients can lead a completely productive life.
🔹 “Every abdominal pain or loose motion in IBD means disease flare.”
Sometimes symptoms may be due to infection, IBS overlap, stress, or food intolerance , not always active inflammation.
Early diagnosis, regular follow-up, and correct information can change the course of IBD.
Don’t let myths guide your treatment. Consult your gastroenterologist and stay informed. 💜
