"Two Surgeries. Two Young Women. One Important Change in Bihar."

Yesterday was another meaningful day in our journey against obesity.

In a single day, we performed "two successful bariatric surgeries" on two young women—one weighing "94 kg with a BMI of 38", and the other weighing "98 kg with a BMI of 39".

One travelled from "Sasaram", while the other was from Patna.

Different cities. Different journeys. But both had one thing in common: they understood that obesity needs proper medical management and chose the right pathway for their health.

Both surgeries went smoothly, and both patients are recovering very well.

For me, however, the most satisfying part is not simply performing two bariatric surgeries in a day. It is witnessing the "change in awareness happening across Bihar."

There was a time when obesity was often considered merely a cosmetic issue—something to be managed only by “eating less” or “exercising more.” Today, more people are beginning to understand that obesity is a chronic disease that can affect almost every aspect of health and deserves scientific, evidence-based treatment.

When young patients come forward, understand their BMI, discuss the available treatment options, and make an informed decision about their health, it tells us that awareness is growing.

Bihar is changing. The conversation around obesity is changing. And that change can transform lives.

To everyone struggling with obesity: you don't have to keep fighting the same battle without guidance. "Understand your condition, know your options, consult an expert, and choose the treatment pathway that is right for you."

Our mission continues—to spread awareness, fight obesity, and make scientific obesity treatment accessible to more people across Bihar.

"Two patients yesterday. Many healthier tomorrows ahead."

BARIATRIC CONNECT | Connecting Surgery, Nutrition & Better Patient Outcomes

A Sunday well spent in the pursuit of knowledge, collaboration, and advancing bariatric care.

It was a privilege to be invited as a Keynote Speaker at “Bariatric Connect,” a conference organised by the Poshan Dhara Association – Bihar Chapter.

I had the opportunity to speak on “How to Start and Sustain Bariatric Surgery in Tier-2 Cities of India”—a subject very close to me and one that reflects the growing need to make comprehensive bariatric and metabolic care accessible beyond metropolitan cities.

I was honoured to share the academic platform with Dr. Richa Jaiswal Ma’am, who delivered an insightful session on “Nutritional Surveillance in Bariatric Patients,” highlighting the crucial role of structured nutritional monitoring in achieving successful long-term outcomes after bariatric surgery.

The conference witnessed a packed audience, with nutritionists from across Patna coming together for meaningful discussions on the multidisciplinary management of obesity and bariatric patients. The enthusiasm, interaction, and appreciation for both sessions made the experience truly rewarding.

My sincere thanks to Dr. Supriya and the entire Poshan Dhara Association – Bihar Chapter team for the kind invitation and for creating such a valuable academic platform.

Bariatric surgery is not just about the operation—it is about building a strong ecosystem where surgeons, nutritionists, physicians, and allied healthcare professionals work together to deliver sustainable outcomes for patients living with obesity.

Sharing a few glimpses from a memorable academic Sunday.

Learning. Connecting. Collaborating. Advancing Bariatric Care Together.

WHEN WEIGHT LOSS BECOMES LIFE GAINED

These transformations tell a story far beyond the numbers on a weighing scale.

They represent people who once struggled with severe obesity, knee and back pain, limited mobility, diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and other obesity-related health problems—and who made a courageous decision to take control of their health.

Following bariatric and metabolic surgery, the change has been remarkable.

Weight has come down.
Mobility has improved.
Pain has reduced.
Metabolic health has improved.
And perhaps most importantly—confidence, independence and hope have returned.

For appropriately selected patients with severe obesity, bariatric surgery can truly be a boon. It is not merely a procedure for reducing body weight; it is a scientifically established metabolic treatment that can significantly improve obesity-related diseases and quality of life.

Every transformation is different. Every journey requires commitment, discipline and long-term follow-up. But seeing patients regain their health and return to a more active life is what makes these journeys so rewarding.

From struggling to move—to moving forward in life.
From living with disease—to working towards better health.
From losing weight—to gaining life.

These are not simply Before & After pictures.
They are Before & After stories of health, confidence and possibility.

Hello everyone !!!! I would like to share a small story about this patient transformation journey . Do read and share your feedback

“At 63, He Didn’t Just Lose 40 Kgs. He Gained His Health Back.”

One year ago, this 63-year-old gentleman came to us weighing 131 kg, struggling with morbid obesity and multiple obesity-related health problems.

His daily life was being affected by severe diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea. He was also diagnosed with gall bladder stones. At his age and with multiple associated conditions, treatment required careful evaluation, planning and a comprehensive approach.

After a detailed assessment, we performed bariatric surgery along with gall bladder surgery in the same sitting.

Today, one year later, the difference is remarkable.

131 kg → 91 kg
40 kg weight loss
Diabetes – complete remission
Blood pressure – normalized
Sleep apnea – significantly improved/resolved
And most importantly, a healthier and more active life.

For him, bariatric surgery was never simply about becoming thinner. It was about treating the disease of obesity and reclaiming health.

His journey carries an important message: age should not automatically become a barrier to treating obesity. In appropriately selected patients, after thorough evaluation, metabolic and bariatric surgery can provide substantial and sustained health benefits.

Sometimes the biggest transformation is not what you see in the BEFORE & AFTER photographs.

It is what changes inside the body — and in the life the patient is able to live.

40 kgs lighter. Diabetes in remission. Blood pressure controlled. A new chapter at 63.

"Loud Snoring Isn't Normal. It Could Be a Warning Sign. 😴⚠️"

Does someone in your family snore loudly every night?
It's easy to laugh it off but loud snoring, especially in people with obesity, may be a sign of a serious condition called Sleep Apnea.

When excess weight increases, fat accumulates around the neck and chest, narrowing the airway. During sleep, the airway can partially or completely collapse, causing:
Loud snoring
Interrupted breathing during sleep
Poor-quality sleep and frequent awakenings
Daytime sleepiness and fatigue
Feeling sleepy while driving or working
Poor concentration, low energy, and mood changes

Left untreated, sleep apnea can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
For many patients with obesity, losing weight especially through a medically supervised approach or bariatric surgery when indicated—can significantly improve or even resolve sleep apnea.

Don't ignore loud snoring. Sometimes, it's your body's way of asking for help.

Two inspiring days at the "FARIS Robotic Observership Programme" at Swagat Super Speciality Hospital, Guwahati, under the mentorship of "Prof. Dr. Subhash Khanna".

It was a privilege to witness multiple complex robotic procedures performed with remarkable precision, efficiency, and surgical finesse. Every case reflected not only technical excellence but also the true potential of robotic surgery in transforming patient care.

The academic discussions, interactive case reviews, and exchange of ideas among surgeons made the programme exceptionally enriching. Beyond being an outstanding robotic surgeon,"Dr. Subhash Khanna Sir" is a dynamic teacher and an inspiring mentor who is passionately shaping the future of robotic surgery in India.

One of the highlights for me was the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a "robotic cholecystectomy", an invaluable learning experience that further strengthened my commitment to advancing robotic surgery.

As robotic surgery continues to redefine modern surgical practice, my vision remains clear—to bring these advanced, minimally invasive techniques to "Bihar", ensuring that patients receive world-class treatment without the need to travel to metropolitan cities.

The future of surgery is robotic, and Bihar is ready to be a part of this transformation.

My sincere gratitude to "Prof. Dr. Subhash Khanna Sir", the entire faculty, and the organizing team of the FARIS Observership Programme for an unforgettable learning experience.

Looking forward to translating this knowledge into better care for our patients and contributing to the growth of robotic surgery in Bihar.
