In 5 months, the choice to give birth at home could disappear for thousands of Australian families. Most people have never even heard this is happening.

Here’s the short version. If you plan a homebirth, you need two midwives present, one lead, and one “second” for backup.

From 1 January 2027, a change to insurance rules means the only people who can legally fill that second role will be midwives with a specific extra qualification, and there are only 1,742 of them in the entire country.

1,742 people, for a role that needs to be filled at every single Homebirth in Australia.

This isn’t a safety upgrade. There’s no evidence it makes birth safer. It’s an insurance gap (aka method of control enacted by bureaucratizing women’s choices) that’s about to take away a choice thousands of families are actively making right now!

What can you do? Fill out the petition ASAP!

When your response to an event, a statement, a slur or even just a circumstance - seems over the top (even to you 😏) there’s a good chance it is pointing to a pattern. A habitual way of perceiving other and the world, and/or your place in it.

Ask yourself these questions and make space for responses to arise from your feeling state (Limbic brain), rather than your cognitive, sense-making mind (the cortex).

- what does this feel similar to?
- is this a tender spot?
- what do I know about my conception? Gestation? Birth?
- Are there any parallels?
- Have I felt this way before?

The answers don’t need to come from fact - more from the felt senses… And there’s no right/wrong or better answers…

It’s just an opportunity to explore, and to discover. To feel and allow the emotions to move through you and complete their circuit through your curiosity.

Some deep breaths, journaling and a long bath never go astray, and are particularly lovely if you do find yourself in tender terrain…
