On the sacred occasion of **Guru Purnima** (29th July 2026), I had the divine privilege of visiting the ancient **Vakra Kali Amman Temple** at **Thiruvakkarai (Tiruvakkarai)**, near Puducherry, along with our Trustee, our Trust Coordinator, our beloved Cookie, and a dear friend.
This magnificent temple, believed to be over **2,000 years old**, is one of the most revered **Shakti Peethas** of South India. What makes it truly unique is that the fierce and compassionate **Goddess Vakra Kali** is enshrined within the sacred temple complex of **Lord Chandramouleeswarar (Shiva)**. While Lord Shiva is the presiding deity, it is Maa Vakra Kali whose divine presence draws countless devotees seeking protection, courage, and relief from life's hardships.

The Sacred Legend of Maa Vakra Kali
According to the **Sthala Purana**, the mighty demon **Vakrasura** performed intense penance to Lord Shiva and received a boon that made him nearly invincible. Intoxicated by his power, he began tormenting the Devas and sages.
Lord Vishnu ultimately destroyed Vakrasura with His Sudarshana Chakra. However, Vakrasura's equally fierce and pregnant sister, **Dhumuki (Dunmukhi/Tunmuki)**, attacked the gods in vengeance.
To restore cosmic balance, Goddess Parvati manifested as the terrifying **Vakra Kali**. In an extraordinary act of divine compassion and righteousness, She first removed the unborn child from Dhumuki and wore it as an ornament upon Her ear before slaying the demoness, thereby avoiding the sin of harming the unborn. Having destroyed the lineage of Vakrasura, the Divine Mother came to be revered as **Vakra Kali**.
Why is She called "Vakra" Kali?
The Sanskrit word **"Vakra"** means *crooked, curved, or unconventional*. At a deeper spiritual level, it symbolizes the Divine Mother's power to straighten the "crooked" paths of our lives—those shaped by difficult karma, unexpected obstacles, and adverse planetary influences.
For this reason, Thiruvakkarai is revered as a **Vakra Shanti Sthalam**, where devotees pray for relief from karmic challenges, planetary afflictions, fear, and negativity, while seeking divine protection and transformation.
