“TAKE THE PHONE AWAY!” — DON'T PANIC
Your adolescent has misused Instagram.
They've used inappropriate language.
They've been secretly chatting with friends.
Your panic response:
“That's it. No phone!”
The phone is confiscated.
But then…
Your adolescent becomes:
angry → aggressive → argumentative → more secretive.
Parents think:
“See! This proves they cannot be trusted.”
So the restrictions increase.
And the adolescent thinks:
“My parents are controlling my entire life.”
🚨 Now the phone isn't the real problem.
CONTROL has become the problem.
🔄 REPLACE THIS:
“You don't deserve a phone.”
with:
“Having a phone comes with responsibility. We're going to help you build that responsibility so that you can gradually have more freedom.”
Introduce:
RESPONSIBILITY → TRUST → FREEDOM
Not:
MISTAKE → PUNISHMENT → MORE CONTROL
For example:
Stage 1: Restricted access
↓
Demonstrates responsible use
↓
Stage 2: Increased access
↓
Demonstrates consistency
↓
Stage 3: Greater digital independence
🧠 WHY?
Because taking away a privilege can stop a behaviour temporarily.
But it doesn't necessarily teach:
judgment
self-regulation
digital responsibility
risk assessment
decision-making
Your long-term goal is not:
“How do I stop my child from using Instagram?”
It is:
“How do I teach my child to make safe decisions when I am NOT there?”
Because eventually…
You won't be holding the phone.
They will.
And eventually…
You won't be standing beside them.
They will have to make the decision themselves.
🌱 Don't just control access. Build competence.
