Obesity and Infertility
Obesity is a major but often reversible cause of infertility in both women and men. Excess body fat disrupts hormonal balance, leading to irregular ovulation, reduced egg quality, and conditions such as PCOS in women. In men, obesity can lower testosterone levels, impair s***m quality, and contribute to erectile dysfunction.
Even after conception, obesity increases the risk of miscarriage, gestational diabetes, hypertension, and pregnancy complications. The encouraging news is that losing just 5โ10% of body weight can significantly improve fertility, restore normal ovulation, enhance s***m quality, and increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy.
Achieving a healthy weight through lifestyle changes, medical therapy, or bariatric surgery (when appropriate) is one of the most effective ways to improve reproductive health and fertility outcomes.
