Can a sonography report alone tell you whether a previous C-section scar is safe?
Not always.
In the final episode of the Care & Carry Podcast, Dr. Sweta Kumar, Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynaecology, shares a real clinical experience that highlights why pregnancy and delivery decisions cannot be based on a single scan or blood test alone.
She shares the case of a mother with two previous C-sections, whose ultrasound showed a seemingly reassuring scar thickness of around 4.8–5 mm.
However, during labour, the baby developed signs of fetal distress. A C-section was performed immediately, and the surgical findings revealed scar dehiscence.
The case is an important reminder that ultrasound findings are valuable, but they are one part of the overall clinical assessment. A mother's history, examination, baby's condition, previous surgeries and the progress of labour all need to be considered when making decisions about delivery.
Because when it comes to childbirth, numbers on a report are only one part of the story.
The priority is always the safety of both mother and baby.
