There's a strange kind of poetry in the fact that one of modern medicine's most celebrated breakthroughs is basically sugar, salt, and water in the right proportions.
ORS wasn't invented to impress anyone, it was invented to work, and it does, remarkably well.
The World Health Organisation has called it one of the most significant medical advances of the 20th century, and yet, every monsoon, we still see parents reaching for cola or diluted juice to "hydrate" a sick child, treatments that can actually make dehydration worse due to their sugar content.
During monsoon months, when waterborne infections and viral fevers surge, a child's body can lose fluids and essential electrolytes at an alarming rate. Left unaddressed, this isn't just discomfort, it's a genuine medical risk that sends children to emergency rooms every single season, most of which could have been prevented with timely, correctly administered ORS.
So here's our World ORS Day reminder, dressed in a bit of tough love: stock it before you need it, learn the correct preparation method (the ratio matters, too concentrated can be as harmful as too diluted), and treat it as seriously as you'd treat any medicine, because that's exactly what it is.
At Saishree Vitalife Hospital, our paediatricians are always ready to walk new parents through hydration protocols, warning signs, and when a home remedy needs to become a hospital visit. Preparedness isn't paranoia. It's just good parenting.
