The Deodhani Festival at the sacred Maa Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati is one of Assam’s most extraordinary spiritual traditions it’s a powerful meeting point of Shakti worship, devotion, ritual and trance.
Dedicated especially to Maa Manasa, the Serpent Goddess, Deodhani is unlike an ordinary dance festival. During the sacred observances, practitioners known as Deodhas enter intense states of devotional trance and perform ritual movements to the resounding beats of drums and cymbals. Within the tradition, these states are understood as moments in which the devotee becomes a medium for divine presence.
At Kamakhya which is a great centre of Shakti worship and Ta**ra the sight of the Deodhas dressed in red, adorned with flowers and moving with fierce intensity creates an atmosphere that is difficult to describe in words.
