ICU SUCCESS STORY – LIFE SAVED
A 50-year-old male, our apartment security guard, was brought to Sadar Hospital, Ranchi with sudden severe shortness of breath. At presentation, his SpO₂ was 52%
He was a known case of hypertension and diabetes mellitus, non-compliant with medications.
Initial Evaluation
• ABG: Type 2 respiratory failure
• PaCO₂: 93 mmHg
• Chest examination: bilateral coarse crepitations
• Clinical picture suggestive of acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema
ICU Management
The patient was immediately shifted to the ICU and managed with:
• Non-invasive ventilation (NIV)
• Intravenous diuretics
• Oxygen therapy and comprehensive supportive ICU care
• Continuous monitoring of vitals, ABG, and metabolic parameters
Family members were informed and arrived the following day; meanwhile, uninterrupted ICU care was ensured.
Final Diagnosis
• Diastolic Heart Failure (HFpEF – Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction)
Treatment was optimized accordingly.
Outcome
The patient showed steady clinical improvement, avoided invasive ventilation, and stabilized fully.
✅ Today, the patient has been successfully discharged in stable condition, maintaining adequate oxygen saturation on room air and comfortable at rest and on exertion.
Conclusion
This case underscores how early recognition, prompt ICU intervention, and protocol-based management can be life-saving in acute decompensated diastolic heart failure.
