What Is Keratoconus? | Rubbing Eyes Can Damage Your Cornea? | Hyderabad
This young patient was diagnosed with Keratoconus in both eyes — with the right eye being more severely affected.
✨ So today we performed:
Collagen Cross Linking (CXL)
CXL is a procedure designed to strengthen the cornea and help stop the progression of Keratoconus.
Here’s how the procedure works 👇
✔️ The superficial corneal layer is gently loosened
✔️ Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) drops are applied
✔️ The eye is then exposed to controlled UV light
✔️ This helps strengthen the collagen fibers inside the cornea
⏱️ The entire process takes around 20–30 minutes and is performed under topical anesthesia — meaning:
❌ No injections
❌ No stitches
✔️ Completely painless procedure
⚠️ Early signs of Keratoconus:
▪️ Frequent eye rubbing
▪️ Increasing cylindrical number
▪️ Distorted or ghost vision
▪️ Frequent spectacle number changes
One important thing:
Keratoconus cannot be confirmed just by looking at the eyes.
A detailed corneal topography scan is necessary for diagnosis.
And if you are diagnosed with Keratoconus:
🚫 Please do NOT rub your eyes.
