We had the opportunity to investigate differences in post-operative pain, rehabilitation, patient perspectives and PROMs after robotic versus manual TKA in a unique patient population.

We evaluated patients undergoing staged bilateral TKA (previous or first knee surgery with manual techniques in the past and robotic surgery now) with a minimum follow up of 12-months.

Patients perceived reduced pain and faster independent ambulation with robotic TKA. A significantly greater proportion of patients would prefer to undergo robotic TKR if they had to choose again. Patients were more likely to be very satisfied after robotic TKR compared to manual TKR.

PROMs were statistically and clinically comparable, with scores marginally in favor of robotic TKR.

Are existing scoring systems (Oxford knee acore) etc sensitive enough to pick up differences in functional outcomes between a well done manual versus robotic TKA? Probably not. But patients seem to perceive a definite clinical benefit with robotic TKR.
