Biopsy: What Patients Should Know

• A biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosing suspicious oral lesions
• It helps differentiate benign, premalignant, and malignant conditions
• Most oral biopsies are quick, minor procedures under local anesthesia
• Pain is minimal and usually well-controlled with simple meds
• Early biopsy = early diagnosis = better outcomes
• Delaying biopsy can allow disease progression and complicate treatment
• Not every lesion is cancer—but you can’t confirm without histopathology

• Common indications:
– Non-healing ulcer (>2 weeks)
– Red/white patches
– Unexplained swelling or growth

• Healing is usually uneventful within 7–10 days
• Always follow post-op instructions for optimal healing and accurate results. :)

Innovation in surgery isn’t about technology.

It’s about mindset.

Observation.
Adaptability.
Experience.
Curiosity.

Traits that separate good surgeons from the great ones.

What trait do you think matters most in a surgeon?

Orthognathic (jaw) surgery is often misunderstood as purely cosmetic. In reality, it is performed to correct functional problems such as severe bite issues, jaw pain, and breathing disorders.

By repositioning the jaws into the correct anatomical relationship, we restore function, improve health, and naturally enhance facial balance.

This year 2025 was about stepping forward, even when the ground felt unfamiliar.

I explored new surgical arenas.
Took on complex cases.
Trusted my training when confidence wavered.
And learned that growth often begins where certainty ends.

Some days were demanding.
Some victories were silent.
But each surgery shaped my judgment, resilience, and vision.

This year, I didn’t just operate.
I built.
I started my own centre with my husband.
A space rooted in empathy, ethics, and patient-first care.

Grateful for the lessons & grounded by the responsibility. :)

🔥 ORBITAL FLOOR FRACTURES: POCKET GUIDE

Just had another orbital-floor fracture in the ER that reminded me why Pearls & Pitfalls in OMFS is my go-to! Here’s my checklist.

PRE-OP ESSENTIALS
✅ Dual-window CT (bone + soft tissue)
✅ Orbital Index (≥4 = high enophthalmos risk)
✅ Neurosurg consult for displaced roof fx
✅ Globe exam - watch for rupture
✅ Auto-page Ophthalmology for vision changes
⚠️ Peds “white-eye” trap = EMERGENT OR

📅 FOLLOW-UP
2 weeks: Limited EOM/diplopia/high index → operate 1-3 months: Late repairs work when criteria met

INTRA-OP KEYS
🎯 Forced-duction before & after
⚠️ Warn anesthesia: trigeminocardiac reflex

Approach:
Transconjunctival: 2nd vascular arcade
Subciliary: keep orbicularis cuff

Landmarks:
IO nerve → IOF → sphenotemporal buttress
Cauterize ethmoidal arteries
Stay subperiosteal
Clear ALL ledges before sizing

POST-OP MUSTS
✅ Immediate: pupils, globe tension, VA
✅ Topical antibiotics for conjunctival cuts
💬 Counsel: Diplopia may take 9-12 months

💎 PEARLS
Orbital Index = timing made easy
Vision FIRST, fracture second
Stay subperiosteal

⚠️ PITFALLS
Inadequate posterior dissection
Forgetting ethmoidal cautery
Pulling vs extending incision

What’s your go-to orbital fracture tip?
