Yesterday I watched a dentist break down on social media.

She said she always wanted to be an artist, but became a dentist instead and can’t do art anymore. It hit home.

Back in 2011, just 2 months after we started Doctor Smile Dental Clinics, I auditioned for Indian Idol.

Thousands participated. After Round 1, only 100 were selected. They started calling names from No. 100. I stood there thinking I hadn’t made it.

100,99,98, I didn’t even expect but they called my name at rank 1. I was overjoyed yet cautious at the same moment

Round 2 went even better.

I was into the final round and dilemma struck bad, i started having cold feet.

That night I faced a choice.

A dream of becoming a singer… or a dental practice I had just started.

I chose dentistry.

In the final round, I held back.

The judge asked me,
“What happened? You were almost selected.”

I replied,

“Ma’am, I chose security over passion.”

That’s a choice millions of young Indians make—not because they lack talent, but because responsibilities come first.

Fifteen years later, I don’t regret it.

Doctor Smile has grown into one of the largest dental clinic chains in Northeast India, and every smile we create reminds me why I made that decision.

I may not have become an Indian Idol.

But I never stopped singing.
