Hearing a crackling or popping sound in your ear when swallowing, yawning, or chewing? A mild pop can occur when the Eustachian tube opens to equalize pressure behind the eardrum, but louder or persistent crackling may be associated with other ear-related issues.

Dr. T. Mounika, Associate Consultant, ENT, Head & Neck Surgeon at Yashoda Hospitals, explains that allergies, a cold, earwax buildup, or jaw tension and clenching can contribute to popping or crackling sounds. If symptoms follow a recent cold, a gentle saline nasal spray may help, while cotton swabs should be avoided as they can push earwax deeper.

If the popping or crackling becomes worse or is accompanied by dizziness or reduced hearing, an ENT evaluation may be needed to identify the underlying cause and determine appropriate treatment.
