Another Doctor’s Day is a reminder of how deeply our profession is intertwined with society. Every single day, we become part of someone’s story—often during the most difficult chapter of their lives.

I work in surgical oncology, a field where not every outcome is perfect and not every patient can be cured. Yet, nothing compares to the joy of seeing a patient whom I operated on walk into my chamber with a smile and say, “Akhon bhalo achi.” Those three words make every difficult day worthwhile.
As doctors, we witness an entire spectrum of human emotions. We see a husband fighting relentlessly to save his wife. We see sons and daughters struggling to make heartbreaking decisions for their parents. We see sisters working tirelessly to arrange money for their brother’s treatment. We see entire villages coming together to support someone who has no one else. Every day, we are reminded that medicine is not just about diseases—it is about people, relationships, sacrifice, hope, and resilience.

While we care for others, these stories often leave a mark on us too. The emotional weight of our profession is real, but so is the privilege of being trusted at life’s most vulnerable moments.
To all my colleagues, every morning gives us an opportunity that very few professions can offer—the chance to reduce someone’s suffering, restore hope, and make a meaningful difference in another human being’s life.
On this Doctor’s Day, I feel nothing but gratitude for this journey.

If given another life, I would choose to be a doctor again.
