🩸 Do your gums bleed every time you brush?
Many people notice a little blood while brushing and think:
"Maybe I brushed too hard."
"It happens sometimes."
"It's normal."
But healthy gums do not bleed regularly.
As a dentist, one of the most common things I hear from patients is:
"Doctor, my gums bleed every day, but my teeth don't hurt, so I ignored it."
The problem is that bleeding gums are often one of the earliest signs that your gums are not healthy.
Over time, plaque and bacteria accumulate around the gum line. When they are not removed properly, the gums become irritated and inflamed. This condition is called gingivitis.
At this stage, the good news is that the damage is usually reversible with proper dental cleaning and improved oral hygiene.
However, if ignored for months or years, gingivitis can progress to gum disease (periodontitis), where the infection starts affecting the tissues and bone supporting your teeth.
This may lead to:
✔ Persistent bleeding gums
✔ Bad breath
✔ Gum recession (gums pulling away from teeth)
✔ Loose teeth
✔ Tooth loss in severe cases
Another important point:
Bleeding gums are not always caused by brushing too hard.
In fact, many people stop brushing the area because it bleeds, which allows even more plaque to build up and makes the problem worse.
If your gums bleed while:
🦷 Brushing
🦷 Flossing
🦷 Eating hard foods like apples or guava
🦷 Or even without touching them
it's time to pay attention.
The earlier gum problems are treated, the simpler and more effective the treatment usually is.
So the next time you see blood in the sink, don't ignore it.
Your gums may be giving you an early warning sign that your mouth needs care.
