For a long time my answer to “how are you” was one of about four words, and I do this for a living. What changed it wasn’t a breakthrough. It was a free app I open for a minute a day, mostly on the train or in between sessions.

It’s free on iOS and Android. Not sponsored, just something I’d tell a friend about. How We Feel

[how we feel app, journaling apps, emotional check ins, journaling prompts, therapist recommended]

Therapy is not a safe space by default. The room doesn’t come with it, and neither does the qualification.

Safety is something that gets built, mostly in small moments you can actually notice. Whether they check if they’re the right fit before taking you on. Whether they can say they don’t know. What happens when you tell them something they said didn’t sit right, and whether anything changes after.

That last part is most of it. Not the absence of ruptures, but what gets done about them.

Waiting to feel ready is a reasonable plan that almost never works. The readiness isn’t sitting somewhere ahead of you, waiting to be delivered. Most people only feel ready about three weeks after they’ve started.

Whatever it is for you. The appointment, the conversation, the thing you’ve been describing as something you’ll get to.

People say it kindly most of the time. It’s meant as encouragement, or permission, or a way of saying they’d like to see you okay again.

But it lands differently depending on what happened to you. If the thing ended, there’s somewhere to go. If it didn’t, you’re being asked to act as though it did, mostly so the conversation can stop.

Notice who tends to be more comfortable after it stops.

[moving on, what moving really means, moving on can mean many things, mental health matters, therapy matters, when you say move on to someone]

Growth rarely feels like growth. Nobody claps. You usually notice weeks later that you handled something differently than you would have last year.

The pause before the reply. The no with no reasons attached. Catching the pattern while you’re still in it.

That’s the work. It just doesn’t photograph well.

Caption for carousel:

Every year around this time people start doing maths on what’s left. Three months to fix the year, salvage the goals, become the person January had in mind.

The list from January isn’t a fair record of what happened to you. Most of what took up your year was never going to be on it. The thing you got through quietly. The people you held together. The days you turned up when it would have been easier not to.

That was the year. It just didn’t look like progress.

Last slide is a prompt if you want to sit with it.

You don’t need a prepared version of your life. You don’t need to be at your worst to deserve the appointment. And if it doesn’t feel right with the person sitting across from you, that isn’t therapy failing. That’s a fit thing, and you’re allowed to try someone else.

Some people come in convinced they’ve become a colder version of themselves. Harder to reach, slower to care, not much left for anyone.

Usually nothing was lost. They’ve just been somewhere cold for a long time.

Conditions change. So do people.

If you want it shorter for the reel description, the first two lines stand on their own.

[ice melting analogy, ice into water, therapy analogy, mental health analogy, therapy matters, therapy is a mirror]

Watch what happens the next time a woman says something painful out loud. Within a day, the conversation is about her tone. Whether she waited too long. Whether she’s enjoying the attention.

Very few people stay on the actual thing that happened to her.

Women pick this up early. That there’s a right way to be hurt, and getting it wrong costs you the little sympathy you were given in the first place. So you learn to watch yourself from the outside while it’s still happening.

That’s a hard thing to unlearn.
