Introducing different food textures is an exciting part of your baby’s feeding journey, especially between 6–8 months, when they’re ready to explore more than breast milk. Your baby’s jaw and mouth develop during this period, enabling them to eat thicker purees like mashed dal, rice, and rice pudding.

You can let your child touch, squish, and even play with their food. Yes, it can be messy, but it helps them build chewing and self-feeding skills. Introducing a variety of textures early can greatly reduce babies’ resistance toward trying different foods as they grow older.

Different textures are critical for the development of:

Oral motor skills, including
Cheek muscle strengthening
Tongue movement
Jaw coordination

1. Start with smooth purees; then move to thicker purees

2. Soft finger foods for tiny hands

3. Mix textures in one meal

4. Introduce a variety of grains

5. Play with cooking methods

6. Different temperatures, different experiences

7. Encourage baby-led tasting

8. Make mealtime fun and engaging

Best Effective Ways to Manage Junk Food for Kids:

1. Make a Meal and Snack Schedule

Children should eat three meals and two snacks every three to four hours. They should also drink plenty of fluids. Planning for these will improve your child’s diet and make them less cranky. If you are out with your kids, bring a cooler stocked with carrots, yoghurt, and water so you will not need to rely on fast food.

2. Prepare Your Dinner Menu in Advance

Planning a weekly menu may seem overwhelming, so consider doing it two or three days at a time. Generally speaking, a good dinner does not need to be extravagant. Instead, it should contain a variety of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, along with lean meat, cheese, or beans as protein sources.

3. Slowly Introduce New Foods to Your Child

Children are naturally averse to new foods. Sometimes, their taste buds need to become accustomed to a flavor before enjoying it. Talk to your pediatrician about whether a nutrition shake could benefit your child if they don’t seem to be getting enough nutrients.

4. Fun Ways to Eat Healthily

Experiment with condiments and dips if your children won’t eat vegetables. You can serve them thinly cut carrots with ranch salad dressing. Hummus, salsa, and yoghurt-based sauces are their favourites.

5. Make the Most of Your Mornings

Breakfast is one of the easiest ways to get more fiber in your diet. Try high-fiber cereals as an easy solution. If you want to make whole-grain pancakes and waffles all week, make batches of whole-grain batter.

6. Reduce Your Junk Food Intake

The foods that enter the house should be chosen by you-not your kids. You force your kids to eat more whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and dairy by limiting junk food around the house.

7. Creatively Prepare Meals

Foods kids eat have a greater variety when the meal is more creative. Smiley-face pancakes and silly names help them to get excited about food. Anything mini is always a hit too.

Building a healthy and balanced diet

Eating a variety of foods keeps our meals interesting and flavorful. It’s also the key to a healthy and balanced diet because each food has a unique mix of nutrients—both macronutrients (carbohydrate, protein, and fat) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). The Kid’s Healthy Eating Plate provides a blueprint to help us make the best eating choices.

Along with filling half of our plate with colorful vegetables and fruits (and choosing them as snacks), split the other half between whole grains and healthy protein:

Kids_Vegetables
The more veggies – and the greater the variety – the better.
Potatoes and French fries don’t count as vegetables because of their negative impact on blood sugar.
More on vegetables >

Kids_Fruits
Eat plenty of fruits of all colors.
Choose whole fruits or sliced fruits (rather than fruit juices; limit fruit juice to one small glass per day).
More on fruits >

KidsWG
Go for whole grains or foods made with minimally processed whole grains. The less processed the grains, the better.
Whole grains—whole wheat, brown rice, quinoa, and foods made with them, such as whole-grain pasta and 100% whole-wheat bread—have a gentler effect on blood sugar and insulin than white rice, bread, pizza crust, pasta, and other refined grains.
More on whole grains >

Kids_HealthyProtein
Choose beans and peas, nuts, seeds, and other plant-based healthy protein options, as well as fish, eggs, and poultry.
Limit red meat (beef, pork, lamb) and avoid processed meats (bacon, deli meats, hot dogs, sausages).
