I once watched a baby ignore a â‚ą20,000 toy.

It had lights.

Music.

Buttons.

Everything money could buy.

The parents kept pressing every button, hoping the baby would finally smile.

Nothing.

Then the father leaned closer.

Made the funniest face he could.

The baby burst into laughter.

Not once.

Again.

And again.

That’s when it hit me.

The most entertaining thing in a baby’s world isn’t a toy.

It’s another human being.

Your face.

Your voice.

Your reactions.

As a paediatrician, I see parents trying their absolute best.

Buying the safest crib.

The smartest toys.

The newest gadgets.

But the brain isn’t asking for more plastic.

It’s asking for more connection.

A baby learns when you respond.

When you imitate them.

When they smile…

…and you smile back.

Science calls it serve and return.

I simply call it showing up.

You don’t need an hour.

You don’t need perfection.

You just need a few minutes where your child has all of you.

No notifications.

No scrolling.

No distractions.

Because years from now…

they probably won’t remember which toy you bought.

But they’ll always remember what it felt like…

to have your full attention.

And sometimes,

that’s the most expensive gift you can give—because it costs your time.
