How do I decide when experts disagree?
Many of you are confused by the contradictory information about supplements.
One expert recommends them.
Another warns against them.
So how do I personally navigate this confusion?
After being in the medical field for more than 14 years, I have learned two important lessons.
First, I do not blindly follow any new health trend—whether it is promoting a supplement or criticizing it.
Whenever I hear a strong claim, I ask:
Who is making this claim?
What is the evidence?
Is there a commercial interest involved?
Does it make biological sense?
And most importantly, does it match what I observe in real people?
Second, I trust the intelligence of the human body.
Our bodies have evolved over millions of years and perform thousands of complex functions every second without our conscious effort.
The body is constantly communicating with us through appetite, energy levels, sleep, digestion, mood, cravings, recovery, and symptoms.
The problem is not that the body has stopped communicating.
The problem is that many of us have forgotten how to listen.
So when experts disagree, I don’t immediately ask:
“Whom should I believe?”
I ask:
“What is my body telling me?”
“What problem am I trying to solve?”
“Do I really need this, or am I responding to marketing and fear?”
The answer is not to blindly trust every expert.
Nor is it to reject every expert.
The answer is to develop the ability to think, observe, question, and listen to your own body.
