Kasturba Hospital, Manipal Successfully Removes Large Brain Tumor in 15-Day-Old Newborn
A baby brought to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal at just 15 days old with a significantly enlarged head was diagnosed with a large intracranial brain tumor through MRI scans. Despite the high risks involved due to the newborn's age and extremely low blood volume, the medical team proceeded with surgery after detailed counselling with the parents.
Led by Dr. Raghavendra Nayak and the Neurosurgery team, surgeons successfully achieved complete removal of the tumor. Following intensive postoperative care in the NICU, the infant recovered well and was discharged a week later.
Now, three years after the surgery, the child is healthy, showing normal neurological development, and is preparing to start preschool.
The successful outcome was made possible through the coordinated efforts of the Neurosurgery, Neonatology, Pediatric Oncology, Critical Care and Rehabilitation teams, highlighting the importance of early intervention, multidisciplinary care and specialized expertise in treating complex pediatric cases.
