Doctor, is epilepsy treatment possible?” — the answer is yes, definitely yes.
At present, more than 23 anti-seizure medications are available in India.
The most important thing is to correctly identify the type of seizure the patient has. Once the Epilepsy is properly diagnosed, giving the right medicine in the proper dose can control seizures in nearly 75 to 80 percent of patients with just one or two medications.
However, around 20 to 25 percent of patients continue to have seizures even after receiving one or two appropriate medicines properly. This condition is known as drug-resistant Epilepsy.
For these patients, advanced treatment options are now available. In drug-resistant epilepsy, advanced investigations such as Video EEG, 3 Tesla MRI Brain and PET Scan are performed to identify the exact focus in the brain from where the seizures are originating.
Once the seizure focus is identified, Epilepsy surgery is possible in properly selected patients.
Apart from Epilepsy Surgery, other advanced treatment options are also available for resistant epilepsy, including ketogenic diet therapy and Neuromodulation therapies such as Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS).
With advanced treatment approaches, even patients with drug-resistant epilepsy can achieve much better seizure control and improved quality of life.
