I was recently re-watching The Office (for the 700th time) and there is a scene in season 5 where Pam looks at the camera and says, “I hate the idea that someone out there hates me.”

That quote stuck with me in a heavy way because we often become so consumed with knowing that another person out there doesn’t have quite the right impression of us.

I’m not talking about family or close friends, people who (hopefully) know us well enough to either dismiss or filter through any problematic misconceptions.

I’m talking about people who only know us very shallowly or people we might have had only a couple interactions with.

How do we deal with others’ negative perceptions of us when the relationship isn’t close enough to just talk it out and sort through the problems they (might mistakenly) have with us?

First, understand that it’s a trap to think that we can fix another person’s perception of us.

Just because someone doesn’t particularly like us on a personal level doesn’t mean that we’re a bad person. It just means that the person has a personal preference that they believe we haven’t met and we can’t control or change their inclination.

Also, be careful to not absorb feedback from just anyone. Think about those whose opinions you value: your partner, your best friend, your parents, your siblings, your boss, your coaches, etc. Whoever it is, determine who those people are that add meaning, joy, and purpose to your life.

When you hear critical comments about yourself from people who aren’t on that list, know that they ultimately only have as much power as you’re willing to give them. 🧠

Today, ‪October 10th‬, is World Mental Health Day.

It’s a day intended to highlight mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against the social stigma that still persists.

Mental health is one of the most neglected areas of public health, despite its widespread prevalence.

Close to 1 billion people worldwide are living with a mental disorder. The harmful use of alcohol results in 3.3 million deaths each year. 1 person dies every 40 seconds by su***de. I can go on and on …

And now, due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the past few months have brought on a whole new set of challenges and changes, which is having an even further impact on people’s mental health.

Mental health struggles affect EVERYONE, directly or indirectly.

So, it’s time to see mental health for what it really is—health.

Which is why today, and every day, The Healthy Mind Movement will continue doing its part in raising awareness and destigmatizing something that every single one of us will encounter at some point in our lives – and I invite you all to do the same!

Let’s be the generation that ends mental health stigma and become the generation that offers support, understanding, and fair accessibility to treatment.

BE PART OF THE MOVEMENT. 🧠

In honor of World Mental Health Day, what are you going to do today to care for your mental health? Lmk below! 👇🏼
