Strengthening District-Level Action for Clean Air & Public Health in Ludhiana

Doctors for Clean Air & Climate Action (DFCA) and Lung Care Foundation have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the District Administration, Ludhiana, in the presence of Sh. Himanshu Jain, Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana and Dr. Rajiv Khurana, Founder Trustee, Lung Care Foundation, reaffirming a shared commitment to advancing evidence-based action on air quality, health, and sustainable development.

As part of this engagement, the Ludhiana Clean Air & Health Policy Brief, the city's first health-centred clean air policy mandate, was formally presented to the Deputy Commissioner by Dr. Vivek Gupta, Cardiac Anesthesiologist and Co-Chairperson, Ludhiana Forum for Clean Air, along with Dr. Puneet Pooni, Head of Pediatrics, Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMCH). The policy brief highlights the importance of integrating health into local clean air planning and decision-making.

Together, these milestones reflect a shared vision of placing health at the centre of clean air action and fostering stronger partnerships for healthier, more resilient communities across Ludhiana.

Climate change isn't just changing the weather it's changing lives.

When floods strike, the impact goes far beyond damaged homes. Women and girls often face limited access to menstrual hygiene products, clean water, privacy and healthcare making an already difficult situation even more challenging.

To support flood affected communities in Assam, Lung Care Foundation contributed 5,000 sanitary pads, ensuring that women and girls have access to an essential need during this climate driven emergency.

Climate resilience is not only about responding to disasters it's about protecting health, dignity and the needs of the most vulnerable.

Strengthening Healthcare Response to Air Pollution

Lung Care Foundation (LCF), under its Doctors for Clean Air and Climate Action (DFCA) initiative, launched the Policy Brief on Air Pollution and Health at IMA Meerut, reaffirming the need to integrate environmental health into healthcare and policy discussions.

The policy brief highlights the growing health burden of air pollution and presents evidence based recommendations to strengthen climate informed healthcare through AQI informed clinical practice, preventive patient counselling, healthcare capacity building and greater health sector engagement in clean air action.

The campaign was led by Dr. Sandeep Jain and Dr. Sumit Upadhyay. The initiative received the support and guidance of Dr. Manisha Tyagi, President, IMA Meerut; Dr. Vikas Gupta, Secretary, IMA Meerut, Dr. Vijay Singh and Dr. Alok Agrawal, President Elect IMA Meerut and several other senior doctors and members of the medical fraternity.

The launch marks another step towards empowering the medical community to address the health impacts of air pollution through informed advocacy, collaboration and climate resilient healthcare.

From Awareness to Preparedness: Strengthening Environmental Health at LLRM Medical College, Meerut

Lung Care Foundation (LCF), under its Doctors for Clean Air and Climate Action (DFCA) initiative, successfully disseminated Air Pollution and Heat-Health awareness posters across LLRM Medical College, Meerut, to strengthen environmental health awareness among the medical fraternity and future healthcare professionals.

As part of the initiative, Air Quality Index (AQI) monitors were handed over to the institution to support real-time air quality monitoring, preparedness, and AQI-informed healthcare practices. The monitors will help strengthen environmental health preparedness and promote effective risk communication within the healthcare setting.

The awareness materials reached faculty members, clinicians, medical students, interns, and healthcare professionals, encouraging the integration of air quality awareness, preventive counselling, and environmental health into routine clinical practice.

The initiative was led by Dr. Sandeep Jain (Chairman) and Dr. Sumit Upadhyay (Project Lead), with the support of Dr. R.C. Gupta, Principal, LLRM Medical College, along with Dr. Vijay Singh, Dr. Rajeev Agarwal, Dr. P.K. Bansal, and several senior doctors and academicians.

Strengthening Outreach for Clean Air, Sustainable Agriculture & Public Health

On 29 July 2026, Lung Care Foundation, through its initiatives, Doctors for Clean Air & Climate Action (DFCA) and Saanjhi Hawa te Sehat, a UNEP-supported initiative, officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of Punjab, at Mohali.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Rajiv Khurana, Founder Trustee, Lung Care Foundation, and Dr. G.S. Brar, Director, Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Punjab, marking the beginning of a long-term collaboration to strengthen grassroots awareness and action on clean air, sustainable agriculture and public health.

Together, we will drive communication, IEC, digital outreach and community sensitisation initiatives to empower farmers with practical, evidence based information. By leveraging the Department's digital communication channels, this partnership has the potential to directly reach over 3 lakh farmers across Punjab.

Building on our ongoing work in the state, this collaboration will help translate awareness into action bringing credible, health focused information closer to farming communities and supporting cleaner, healthier and more sustainable rural environments.

Together, we look forward to creating meaningful and lasting impact for farmers, their families and future generations.
