Establishment:
The first open heart sugery to ever be done in the Middle East happened in Baghdad, by Dr. Yousif Al-No’man, in the year 1964. Baghdad has also embraced the 1978 Asian Conference of cardiac surgery that gathered the top cardiac surgeons in the world. However, the work on this kind of surgeries, in particular, has been declining over the years despite the presence of four sections f
or cardiac surgeries in different hospitals in Baghdad, by 1992, namely:
The Cardiac Surgery Section in Al-Shaheed Adnan Hospital
The Cardiac Surgery Section in Ibn Al-Nafees Hospital
The Cardiac Surgery Section in Al-Kadumia Al-Ta’aleemy Hospital
The Cardiac Surgery Section in Al-Rasheed Al-Askaree Hospital
After a throughly examination and studies of the conditions of the Iraqi people, it has been agreed upon that the main reason for the decline of cardiac surgeries in Iraq is the fragmentation of the efforts and the scarcity of equipment. Thus, in the year 1992, it was a greed to bring together the efforts and compile these sections into one building to complete one another. Accordingly, the staff members and the equipments were transferred to the new location that was chosen. After the restless work on the rehabilitation of the hospital to make it sufficient for cardiac surgeries, the hospital was opened in 1993 with a capacity of 166 beds, one catheter device, and 6 rooms for open cardiac surgeries. In 04/05/1993 First patient entered the center
In 03/06/1993 First catheterization experience
In 22/06/1993 First open cardiac surgery in the hospital
And in 1994, the center became the training location for Iraqi Board studies for cardiopathy of both children and adults. After the oil-for-food program, the center was rehabilitated by importing two new catheter devices, updating many other devices, and increasing its clinical capacity by adding extra beds and rooms to have the total of 202 beds and 8 surgery rooms. This capacity increase was to void the overcrowding of patients. Hospital Departments:
