There are more and more Italian civil records available online almost weekly but do you know the original source for this database?

In 1975 Family Search International began working with the Italian National Archive to preserve the civil records in the form of microfilm. They have worked with the the provincial archives to create this database which many now rely-on to conduct research on Italian ancestry. FamilySearch.org was the original depository for these digital gems.

An agreement in 2011 between Family Search International and the Italian Archives General Directions of the Ministry of Heritage, Cultural Activities made possible the digitizing and publishing of Italian civil records on the Portale Antenati website. They launched a new improved website in November 2021 and records have been moved systematically from Family Search to the Antenati website.

So remember when you are unable to find a record on the Antenati website it might still be available on the original source, FamilySearch.org.

This is a death record from 1910 in Sicily that is unusual in that it reports the cause of death - by su***de. This is unusual as it is rare to find the cause of death listed on most Italian civil death records.

This is also important as it notes the su***de occurred near the town cemetery and this type of death could cause immense social and spiritual shame for the surviving family while the Catholic church could refuse religious funeral services and burial in consecrated ground for those who took their own lives.

The Lombardia (Lombardy) region is considered the economic powerhouse of Italy and is a global center for business, fashion and finance. Milano is the regional capital and well-known as the center of Italian fashion.

The region is divided into 11 provinces: Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Cremona, Lecco, Lodi, Mantova, Monza and Brianza, Pavia, Sondrio and Varese. Milano is a 12th separate amministrative district.

AI services like ChatGPT, Google Gemini or Perplexity can help, not replace, the genealogist in creating research plans or transcribing records. Be aware that this is only a tool as any AI service will note, “AI responses may include mistakes”, and all results have to be reviewed and checked for accuracy. A common issue with AI is called ‘hallucination’, which occur when a generative AI model confidently fabricates incorrect, misleading, or entirely fictitious information while presenting it as fact.

This marriage record transcription is an example of the type of mistakes AI can make that would be disastrous in helping someone to trace their ancestry. The location listed is the wrong town/region and parts of the names for the groom and bride are wrong. These are the types of mistakes that might be missed if you do not know how to read original Italian records – we do know how to read the originals.

This is the index page for births in a town in the Campania region, notice the frequency of the surname Esposito. The name derives from the Latin word expositus, or "to expose".

Historically, the name was given to foundlings who were placed outside of churches, monasteries, or orphanages (often in a revolving cylinder called a "ruota degli esposti" or foundling wheel). Since their biological parents were unknown, these children were given the surname "Esposito" (eh-SPOH-zee-toh).

Esposito is extremely common throughout Italy, but it is heavily concentrated in the southern region of Campania and the city of Naples, where it often ranks as the most common surname of all.
