Nel caso di un Pastore Tedesco con linfoadenomegalia generalizzata, linfonodo popliteo, l’osservazione dello stesso campione a 40X ha restituito due letture profondamente diverse:
-nel campo centrale, linfociti coartati ed ipercromatici, apparentemente di piccole dimensioni;
-nel campo periferico, cellule ben espanse e correttamente valutabili, compatibili con un linfoma a grandi cellule.

Questo esempio evidenzia un punto cruciale: la scelta del campo microscopico non è un passaggio accessorio, ma parte integrante del processo diagnostico.

La scelta del campo ottimale per la valutazione della morfologia è cruciale per una corretta identificazione delle cellule esaminate.

One of the challenges we often face in cytology is when the exact origin of the sample is unknown. These images are from a vascularized mass in the neck region measuring approximately 4 x 4 cm, in a 10-year-old Cane Corso.
What do you think the organ of origin might be, and which pathological process is most likely?
1) Lymph node, reactive lymphadenopathy
2) Salivary gland, hyperplasia with saliva accumulation
3) Thyroid, carcinoma
4) Neuroendocrine tumor (NET)

Are you looking at the right part of the sample? 🤓🧐
Below are two images to highlight how important it is to examine the correct microscopic field when assessing cellularity.
German Shepherd, 4 years old, generalized lymphadenopathy, popliteal lymph node.
First photo: 40X magnification, central field of the sample—coarctated and hyperchromatic lymphocytes, apparently small in size 🤔🤔🤔
Second photo: 40X magnification, peripheral field of the same sample—lymphocytes correctly expanded and evaluable. Large-cell lymphoma 😱😱😱
When you open the image, you can see the small cross in the left navigator indicating the part of the slide under examination.
Choosing the optimal field for evaluating morphology is crucial for the correct identification of the cells being examined

Pyrenean Mountain Dog 8y
About a month ago, a new growth appeared on the inner corner of the right eye; it started at the edge of the eyelid margin. Within a short time, it has grown larger and tends to rupture, partly because the dog is scratching it. Current size: 1 cm x 1 cm

Pics of the day.
Cat DSH, 6 y - In October 2025, he fell from the first floor and suffered an ulcerated injury to his left front paw, which progressively swelled over time and never healed.
A new growth the size of an olive appeared on his left front paw, hard in consistency with a central fistula.
