Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common three-dimensional spinal misalignment, with its impact often extending into adulthood and presenting a range of long-term health challenges. This review focused on the long-term management strategies for adult patients with AIS and explores the unique physiological event of pregnancy and its influence on disease progression, clinical symptoms, and treatment decisions, aiming to provide evidence-based guidance and clinical recommendations for comprehensive lifelong health management of this special patient population.

Green June is here 💚
June is Scoliosis Awareness Month — a time to raise awareness, share stories and celebrate the strength of young patients living with scoliosis.

Wearing a brace is not always easy, but our patients show us every day that it doesn’t stop them from moving, smiling, playing sports, competing, having fun and living their lives.

This video is for them: our scoliosis warriors, doing what they love while wearing their brace. Watch it here: https://youtube.com/shorts/K9fRefKtSRs

Let’s spread awareness and support every young person on their scoliosis journey. 💚

Low back pain is a widespread public health concern owing to its high prevalence rates according to the Global Burden of Diseases. This study aimed to investigate the effect of exercise alone or in combination with manual therapy and kinesiotherapy on pain sensitivity, disability, kinesiophobia, self-efficacy, and catastrophizing in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP).
Manual therapy prior to the core exercise technique was the most effective approach to improve health-related functionality compared with exercise alone or exercise combined with kinesiotape in patients with CLBP.

Can wearing a brace be a problem for teenagers?

Isico uses underarm corrective braces that are easily hidden under t-shirts (provided these are a slightly loose fitting), and they are very well tolerated and unobtrusive.
They can be worn for sport and for physical exercise at school and indeed allow the wearer to lead a perfectly normal life.
When we say they “can” be worn, we mean they must be worn! Because the more active the patient is when wearing his/her brace, the better its results will be.
A brace is a rather challenging treatment, but it is certainly not an armour!
It is a medical appliance just like a dental appliance, and, as such, it is anti-aesthetic and can be a bit annoying, but it is, nevertheless, useful. A dental brace is actually more anti-aesthetic than a back brace, just more socially accepted.
In the case of a back brace, however, the advantage is not only aesthetic but also important for the patient’s adult life, as it will reduce the likelihood of pain and back problems later on.

Adult scoliosis and fracture risk: a frequently overlooked connection

A large study published in JAMA Network Open and conducted on people who had recently consulted a doctor for low back pain sought to answer two fundamental questions: which everyday activities can trigger an immediate worsening of pain (the so-called “flare”), and whether practicing these activities more frequently is associated with long-term functional problems.
The results are interesting and, in many ways, reassuring.
In the short term, some activities were indeed associated with a higher likelihood of increased pain: lifting loads (even if not particularly heavy), pushing or pulling, bending, twisting and squatting.
Each additional hour spent performing these movements slightly increased the probability of a flare in the following 24 hours. Conversely, spending more hours sitting was associated with a lower likelihood of immediate worsening.
And in the long term?

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of spinal mobilisation on curvature magnitude, angle of trunk rotation (ATR) and pulmonary function in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS).
The results indicate that adding spinal mobilisation to treatment sessions can effectively reduce the magnitude of curvature and improve scoliosis-related problems in the short term.

This study aimed to systematically review the current literature comparing hands-off approaches with hands-on approaches from a biopsychosocial perspective of pain processing in people suffering from chronic primary neck pain (CPNP).
The findings suggested that hands-off approaches alone are superior to hands-on approaches in the long term, at least for pain intensity. However, substantial heterogeneity warrants a cautious interpretation of these results.

Brace adherence Influenced by geographic and personal factors: ISICO study recently published! 🌍️

The ISICO study entitled “Geographic, Personal and Clinical Factors Influencing Brace Adherence in Adolescents with Idiopathic Scoliosis” has just been published in the journal Children (MDPI). The research also competed for the SOSORT Award 2025.
Brace therapy is an effective treatment for adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), provided that adherence is high.
While previous studies have objectively measured compliance using thermal sensors, the influence of geographic and socioeconomic variables — such as living in mountain versus seaside areas, in large cities versus small towns, or differences in income level — had not previously been investigated...
