Transcutaneous spinal stimulation combined with a long opponent-pronation orthosis (FAST-HAND) for upper extremity motor function in patients with chronic stroke: A randomized-controlled trial
A single-blind, randomized controlled trial evaluated functional assistive stimulation for the hand (FAST-HAND), a novel intervention combining transcutaneous spinal stimulation with a long opponent-pronation orthosis in patients with chronic stroke. Participants receiving FAST-HAND demonstrated modest but significant improvements in upper limb motor function following four weeks of task-oriented rehabilitation.
These findings highlight the potential of combining neuromodulation and assistive technologies to enhance upper extremity recovery after stroke.

At the ISPRM 2026 World Congress in Vancouver, ISPRM Communications Committee member Franchesca König sat down with Dr. Mark Bayley to discuss evidence-based exercise programming for stroke survivors.

Dr. Bayley highlighted the vital importance of the first 12 weeks of recovery, detailing specific interventions like constraint-induced movement therapy for arms and core strength training for legs. A major focus of their discussion was the clinical challenge of achieving proper aerobic heart rates in stroke patients facing fatigue and pain. To address this, Dr. Bayley shared insights into adaptive solutions like the V-PACES trial, which utilizes virtual, seated aerobic exercises to safely circumvent mobility barriers.

Looking to the future, he expressed immense optimism about new biological and stimulation paradigms that could one day artificially extend the brain's neuroplasticity window, allowing for prolonged and enhanced rehabilitation outcomes well beyond the initial three months.

At the ISPRM 2026 World Congress in Vancouver, Dr. Abena Tannor shared crucial insights from a dedicated workshop on building Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) in Africa. Highlighting a significant shortage of PRM physicians across the continent, she identified a fundamental lack of awareness regarding the specialty as the primary barrier to growth.

To combat this, Dr. Tannor is calling on current practitioners to actively advocate for the profession and engage with their local ministries of health to establish and implement concrete policies for medical training programs. Fortunately, developing nations do not have to undertake this journey alone. Dr. Tannor emphasized that powerful partnerships with the ISPRM and the International Rehab Forum are readily available to provide structured curricula and resources to support the next generation of African physiatrists.

Non-invasive brain stimulation research in South Korea: Current trends, challenges, and future directions
A review highlighted the growing body of research on non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) in South Korea, spanning stroke, parkinsonism, traumatic brain injury, dysphagia, and aphasia.
Across 88 studies, both repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) demonstrated promising outcomes in motor, cognitive, swallowing, and language rehabilitation.
Emerging directions include individualised and technology-assisted approaches, including home-based tDCS and rTMS guided by functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

At the ISPRM 2026 World Congress in Vancouver, ISPRM Communications Committee member Krystal Song sat down with Professor Abderrazak Hajjioui of Morocco to discuss his keynote lecture on strengthening rehabilitation in low-resource settings.

Professor Hajjioui highlighted a critical misconception in global health, noting that while discussions often center on technology and infrastructure, the true foundation of rehabilitation is a trained, skilled workforce. He warned against the common barrier of importing workforce models directly from high-income countries, stressing the absolute need to adapt clinical approaches to local environmental factors and realities. To build sustainable systems globally, he argued that medical education must evolve to train practitioners not only as clinicians but as health system builders, educators, and advocates.

At the ISPRM 2026 World Congress, Dr. Yetsa Tuakli-Wosornu of Stanford University and the Sports Equity Lab delivered a compelling message on the future of physical and rehabilitation medicine. Drawing on her background as an elite athlete representing Ghana, Dr. Tuakli-Wosornu advocated for a deeply human-centered approach to movement systems and clinical rehabilitation.

She argued that while advanced medical technology is valuable, it is ultimately secondary to the human element. When an ethic of care, interpersonal connection, and cultural factors are placed at the center of a patient's recovery, exceptional clinical outcomes follow naturally. Her challenge to the global medical community is profound: practitioners must reimagine rehabilitation not just as a mechanical fix, but as restoring movement through the restoration of communities and human connection.

The ISPRM Academy is pleased to announce the launch of "Fundamentals of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound: From Diagnosis to Intervention," a comprehensive 12-module video course led by Dr. Ke-Vin Chang, developed as part of an initiative from the USPRM Special Interest Group (link). In In module 1, Dr. Chang focuses on “ Sonoanatomy of the Shoulder Joint”.
Dr. Chang is a board-certified physiatrist and Clinical Professor at the National Taiwan University College of Medicine, where he also serves as Director of the Department of Education and Research at National Taiwan University Hospital, Bei-Hu Branch.
His expertise spans diagnostic and interventional ultrasound for musculoskeletal and neuromuscular disorders, with a particular focus on ultrasound-guided pain interventions, regenerative medicine, and peripheral nerve imaging.
The modules are led by recognized PRM specialists and follow a structured, joint-by-joint pathway through musculoskeletal ultrasound — pairing normal sonoanatomy with pathology and guided injection technique for each region: Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist and Hand, Hip, Knee, and Ankle and Foot.
This course is designed for physiatrists and other physicians dealing with musculoskeletal conditions seeking to advance their ultrasound education and clinical practice, and to strengthen their diagnostic and interventional skills.
Modules 1, 2, and 3 are now available on the ISPRM Academy.

The design of mobility devices is undergoing a profound transition, moving from purely passive assistance models to systems that encourage the patient's voluntary activation. At ISPRM 2026, Yukiyo Shimizu illustrated this technical evolution through the Qolo sit-to-stand device, a system that uses a gas spring mechanism to facilitate reaching a standing position autonomously, breaking away from the prolonged wait times of traditional electric motors.

The experience presented illustrates how rehabilitation technology can simultaneously influence two distinct spheres of a patient's life. On a strictly physical level, the ability to frequently assume a standing posture acts to prevent joint contractures, reduces the risk of pressure ulcers, and contributes to maintaining bone density. On a relational and psychosocial level, recovering a standard visual height fosters equal interpersonal communication, acting as a mitigator of isolation and psychological barriers. A technical perspective that demonstrates how medical innovation must always consider the individual in their entirety.
