At the ISPRM 2026 World Congress in Vancouver, ISPRM Communications Committee member Krystal Song conducted an exclusive interview with Dr. James Cotton of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Discussing the intersection of artificial intelligence and physiatry, Dr. Cotton explained how large-scale data and computer vision will revolutionize functional assessment. While noting immediate clinical benefits like digital scribes, he also cautioned against algorithmic "blind spots" regarding disability datasets. Ultimately, he predicts a future where "ambient technology" seamlessly tracks real-world patient functioning in the background of daily life. Watch the full interview to explore the next decade of AI in rehabilitation medicine.

During the ISPRM 2026 Congress in Vancouver, the ISPRM Communications Committee interviewed six-time Paralympian Rick Hansen. Having wheeled 40,000 kilometers across 34 countries to advocate for a world without barriers, Hansen shared profound insights with interviewers Krystal Song and Franchesca Konig. He emphasized that the global community still lacks fundamental metrics to measure accessibility, attitudes, and the built environment. Furthermore, Hansen challenged rehabilitation clinicians to actively purge ableism bias from their patient care and to utilize the ISPRM as a conduit for sharing knowledge. Watch the full interview to hear his powerful message of gratitude to the rehabilitation profession.

At the ISPRM 2026 World Congress pre-congress sessions, Dr. John Chae discussed the successful ex*****on of the "Strengthening Academic Leadership" pilot workshop. Developed in collaboration with the Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP), this interactive course was designed to translate the AAP's highly successful Program for Academic Leadership to an international audience. Dr. Chae noted that the session utilized a hybrid educational approach, blending foundational didactic instruction with energetic, real-world case studies and dialogue. By bringing together diverse leaders from around the world, the pilot provided invaluable insights into emotional intelligence, effective communication, and team building, ultimately establishing the groundwork to standardize and optimize future leadership training within the global physiatry community.

๐Ÿ“ธ And just like that, the ISPRM 2026 World Congress in Vancouver comes to a close! ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆโœจ We couldnโ€™t have asked for a better ending to an incredible week. As our new President, Dr. Fary Khan, noted, it has been a "massive, fun event" where we shared knowledge, challenged assumptions, and supported one another.

A huge thank you to Congress President Dr. Larry Robinson, CAPM&R President Dr. Ranita Manocha, and the entire Canadian team for delivering an outstanding congress with 1,570 delegates from 62 countries!
We celebrated our prestigious award winners with Dr. Francesca Gimigliano and finished with the beautiful flag ceremony and ISPRM anthem, officially passing the torch to the Indonesian team.
Next stop: Bali for ISPRM 2027! ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐ŸŒด Safe travels home, everyone!

Professor Fary Khan has officially assumed the presidency of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine at the conclusion of the 2026 World Congress in Vancouver. In her inaugural address, Khan outlined a mandate focused on expanding global capacity to address the estimated 2.5 billion people requiring rehabilitative care. Her strategic priorities include strengthening internal governance and aligning ISPRM initiatives directly with the World Health Organization's Rehabilitation 2030 program and the United Nations.

Khan also detailed comprehensive plans for workforce development. This includes the establishment of a Mentorship Special Interest Group led by Dr. Tawab Khalil, the expansion of the ISPRM Academy and the Archives of ISPRM journal, and a new global training hub based in Doha capable of accommodating 500 professionals. Furthermore, she addressed the necessity of structuring services to respond to current geopolitical, climate, and economic challenges, emphasizing targeted support for practitioners in South America, Africa, and Asia-Oceania. Under her leadership, the society will begin drafting a five-year strategic white paper to guide these international efforts.

"Functioning needs to be incorporated as a health metric alongside survival and morbidity." ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿฅ Following her incredible Sidney Licht Lecture at the ISPRM 2026 World Congress in Vancouver, we spoke with Dr. Colleen O'Connell about the vital role of rehabilitation in crisis situations.

In her keynote on public health emergencies, she reminds us that as rehabilitation physicians, our core mission is restoring function. We must advocate for functioning to be measured just as intensely as survivalโ€”especially during disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and resilience! Letโ€™s stand up and advocate for the care our patients deserve! ๐Ÿ‘‡
