Calling all PRM colleagues and national societies: abstract submission for the 21st ISPRM World Congress is open until 31 December 2026.

We will meet in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia, from 12 to 17 June 2027. The theme is "Diversity and Innovation in Rehabilitation: Bridging the Gaps".

Last week, ISPRM Vice-President Prof. Vu Nguyen attended A***R 2026, the congress of the Latin American Medical Association of Rehabilitation, in the Dominican Republic.

It was a pleasure to collaborate with presidents and leaders of national Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) societies from across the region. PRM is strong in the Americas and the Caribbean, and ISPRM is proud to work alongside these colleagues.

A special thank you to Prof. Mariel Alberto and Prof. Francisco de la Rosa for hosting such a great meeting.

Association between hormone replacement therapy and clinical outcomes in women with rotator cuff tears

A five-year cohort study of women with rotator cuff tears found no significant overall differences in clinical outcomes between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) users and non-users, although HRT users showed distinct early recovery trends and significantly greater odds of moderate-to-severe muscle atrophy on imaging. The findings suggest hormonal status may selectively influence musculoskeletal recovery around the menopause transition, warranting further study.

Greetings from Mexico. At the Mexican national PRM congress, ISPRM President-elect Prof. Levent Özçakar met Dr. Gabriel Darricarrere of Uruguay, the new President of SOCILAR, the Latin American Scientific Society for Rehabilitation.

Prof. Özçakar congratulated him on behalf of ISPRM. Dr. Darricarrere sent a message to ISPRM colleagues: he hopes the two societies will work closely together and strengthen scientific capacity in Latin America.

Planning to join us in Bali next June? This is a good moment to register.

Early bird fees for the 21st World Congress of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM) are open until 31 December 2026, and active ISPRM members pay a reduced fee.

At the international early bird rate, physiatrists pay USD 750 as members and USD 1,000 as non-members. Residents, fellows and trainees pay USD 500 as members and USD 750 as non-members.

There is also a separate fee category for participants from 64 eligible countries, and local rates for colleagues in Indonesia. You need your ISPRM member code - ask it to your national society - to register at the member rate.

Brace-removal transition, gait changes, and early falls after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair
An observational study of 49 patients after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair found that over a quarter fell within 30 days of discharge, with most falls occurring within a week of brace removal. Fallers showed measurable declines in gait speed, step length, and trunk stability specifically after brace removal rather than beforehand, suggesting clinicians should reassess gait and reinforce fall-prevention education at that transition point.

ISPRM Conversation: Ireland joins ISPRM as official national society member

Professor Manoj Sivan, Treasurer of ISPRM, speaks with Dr John Macfarlane, President of the Irish Association of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, about the development of PRM in Ireland, current opportunities and challenges, and the importance of strengthening national and international collaboration within our specialty.

We are also delighted to welcome the Irish Association of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (IAPRM) as an official National Society Member of ISPRM — an important step in further strengthening links between the Irish PRM community and the global rehabilitation medicine community.

Congratulations to Prof. Stefano Negrini, joint winner of the King Salman International Award for Disability Research in the Rehabilitation and Social Sciences category.

He spoke with Franchesca König Toro of the ISPRM Communications Committee about what the award means to him. His first thought went to his colleagues: "I never did anything alone."

He also shares advice for young researchers (think first of the people we serve) and explains why he believes the coming years must be about collaboration between all rehabilitation professionals.
