Here’s your question
“How do I tell my kids I’m separating without hurting them?”
The truth is this:
you can’t avoid the pain altogether.
But you can avoid leaving them alone inside
that pain.
The separation is
a difficult time.
But it doesn’t have to become trauma.
Research tells us that children suffer much more from conflict between parents that the separation itself.
So when you say it… Do it together, if possible.
Use simple, true words.
Don’t accuse the other parent,
Don’t give adult details,
Don’t make them feel responsible.
There is one fundamental thing:
children do not need to know everything but to feel
protected within the truth.
Reassure them of what will remain stable,
Welcome all their emotions
(even anger, even silence).
And above all:
they must not console you,
they don’t have to choose,
they don’t have to grow up too fast.
Children don’t need perfect parents.
They need predictable, present, and confident adults.
Because what really protects them
it’s not staying together at all costs…
but feeling loved,
always,
even while everything changes.
