📚 What is osteoradionecrosis? 📚

Osteoradionecrosis is jaw bone death following radiation. It can be triggered by trauma (dental extraction, dental implant placement, denture rubbing) or without a known trigger. Treatment for established disease is controversial and difficult to predict the disease progression. Previous treatment/prevention has included hyperbaric therapy but often now not recommended following the HOPON trial (2019).

It can cause no symptoms, pain, ongoing discharge or infection and in severe cases fistula formation (permanent discharging pimple) or a jaw fracture.

This case presented with a pathological fracture of the mandible requiring removal of the affected segment and free flap reconstruction with bone and skin from the scapula (shoulder blade).
