I was with two American ladies looking for their roots in a town called Rota Greca, near Cosenza, we needed street directions, we asked for them and instead of getting information on streets we found a piece of their family still living there!

Often I get asked about the typical dishes of Calabria. This week my sister made something known as coming from Cosenza and Crotone Province----CULLURIELLI!

They are traditionally made on the 8th of December and Christmas Eve as a substitute to bread, but nowadays you can find them all year round!

Cullurielli are made with a water, flour, potatoes, yeast and salt dough, then shaped as a donut and fried. They are made in a donut shape because in the past when people travelled by horse or donkeys carts, they could be easily put them around a stick to sell!

In addition to genealogical work I do at the town halls and State Archives in Calabria, I also do research in the churches to find baptism and wedding records for my clients. This involves coordination with the local priests, who allow me to come to these beautiful churches and guide my research.

Last week, the priest of Chiesa di San Tommaso d'Aquino in San Mango d'Aquino started assisting me as there are NO INDICES of the records and all is in Latin!!!

Did you know it is believed that St. Thomas Aquinas may have been born in Calabria???

Did you ever wonder what the archives of a town in Calabria looks like? Here I am entering one in San Mango d'Aquino in the Province of Catanzaro to do research for a client. Before I come to research, I always call the town and organize their availability to let me spend hours researching.

Next week I will be resuming my on-site genealogical work as I will be visiting Bisignano, Maierà, Scigliano and San Mango d'Aquino! I will also be at the state archives in Cosenza and the City Hall there as well! Giovanni was on the road a few weeks ago doing "on the ground" research for a client. He organized with the comune a day to come in and do research and was able to CONFIRM the births and marriage of a client's great grandparents and obtain copies of the original acts and extracts for use in an Italian Citizenship claim.

He was also able to take many pictures of the town to share with our client, allowing her a small taste where her ancestors were from.

Recently I hosted an American with roots in my province of Cosenza. She stayed with my family at our bed & breakfast and during her trip we researched and get copies of her ancestor's birth certificate, found family still alive in the town, visited museums and art shows and and helped her learn more about the life and traditions of Calabria. I am happy to host Americans who want to explore my beautiful land- especially ones who have roots here! Maybe I will see you soon- Giovanni
