WHEN A POSE ASKS FOR EVERYTHING

“When will I get this?”
A student said this while practising Parivṛtta Trikoṇāsana.

She was trying to balance.
Trying to keep the back heel down.
Trying to lengthen the spine.
Trying to turn the chest.

It felt like too much.

And honestly, Parivṛtta Trikoṇāsana does ask a lot.
It asks for balance, hamstring length, and spinal rotation — all at the same time.

That is why, in Iyengar Yoga, support is not decoration.
The wall gives steadiness.
The wall rope gives direction and lift.
The block brings the floor closer.

With one demand reduced, the student can finally observe:
Is the back heel pressing?
Is the pelvis level?
Is the twist coming from the spine, not the neck?
Can the chest turn without collapsing?

Support does not remove the work.
It helps the body understand where the work is.

When the action becomes clear, the support can gradually recede.
Not because we are in a hurry to “do the final pose.”
But because the body has learned.

Every body learns differently.
With the right guidance, the pose begins to make sense.

Come learn with us.

💬 Which pose asks the most of you right now?

THINGS STUDENTS SAY
“I thought my shoulders were tight.”
But sometimes, the shoulders are not the real problem.

The chest has collapsed.
The ribcage has not learned to lift.
So the shoulders work overtime.

“I’m just not flexible.”

But sometimes, the hamstrings are not the real problem.
The pelvis is tucked under.
The legs have never been given their full length to work with.

“I can’t balance.”

But sometimes, balance is not the real problem.
The feet are asleep.
The toes are gripping.
The weight has no clear direction.

“I thought props were for beginners.”

But sometimes, props are exactly what helps the body understand what it cannot yet access alone.

“Śavāsana doesn’t work for me. I just lie there thinking.”

But sometimes, the body is lying down while the jaw, brow, and mind are still standing up.

Every Iyengar Yoga teacher has heard some version of these.
And often, the problem the student names is not the real problem.

It is the loudest symptom.
Not the quiet cause.

This is what the teacher’s eye is for.
This is why we stay in poses long enough for the truth to surface.

💬 What is something you believed about your body that turned out to be wrong?

We read every one.

YOUR TEACHER SAW WHAT COULD NOT YET BE FELT

In class, a teacher may say:
“Lift the inner arch.”
“Broaden the chest.”
“Relax the jaw.”
“Press the outer edge of the back foot.”

At first, the correction may not make sense.
The student feels effort.
The teacher sees where the weight has shifted.

The student feels the shape.
The teacher sees where the breath has stopped.

The student feels focused.
The teacher sees the jaw, the toes, and the quiet places where the body is gripping.

This is why correction matters in Iyengar Yoga.
Not to make the pose look perfect.
But to help the body understand what it cannot yet feel.

A teacher’s eye is not a gift.
It is a training.

Years of learning to see the body clearly —
the weight,
the breath,
the effort,
the tension,
and the student in front of them.

Correction is not criticism.
It is part of how the body learns.

💬 What is one correction your teacher gave you that only made sense months later?

We read every one.
