Cyclone Harry has left deep scars.
The sea swallowed the land, the wind reshaped the face of the Giardini Naxos seafront.
Broken roads, destroyed beach resorts, a landscape we no longer recognize.
And yet, in the middle of all this, one figure has remained still and proud.
It is the Nike of Giardini Naxos, the winged goddess who has been watching the horizon from the Schisò seafront since 1965.
Created by sculptor Carmelo Mendola, this statue does not celebrate a victory in war, but reminds us that right here, in 734 BC, the history of Greek Sicily began.
A point of origin. A symbol of continuity.
And seeing her still standing, wings spread toward the Ionian Sea, in the silence after the fury, reminds us that some roots run deeper than any storm and that we too will rise stronger than before.
