I will tell you about the traditions of the place and I will show you the artistic and natural beauties of the area, but also the places directly connected to the life of your ancestors: the church where they got married, the place where their home was, the cemeteries where they were buried. Almost every family has one. it is that old box full of letters inherited from grandparents or great-grandparents, often completely indecipherable. Yes, because handwritten Italian can be really difficult to decipher. And if it is not a letter, but an ancient document written by hand, perhaps in Latin ... well, you may need the help of an expert! As a genealogist I also deal with transcribing ancient letters and documents, in Italian or Latin. I can also translate the text into English or French.

A partire dalla fine del 1911, durante la guerra che si concluse con l’occupazione italiana della Libia, a Favignana cominciarono a essere deportati centinaia di prigionieri libici.
A causa delle terribili condizioni di detenzione, moltissimi di loro morirono sull’isola. Gli atti di morte custoditi presso l’Archivio di stato di Trapani custodiscono la memoria della loro sorte.

Tra i deportati, vi era anche il poeta Fadil Hasin ash-Shalmani di Misurata, che scrisse una piccola poesia a testimonianza della sua carcerazione:

"Siamo in piccole celle, pressati,
senza luce del sole
chiuse le porte di ferro serrate.
E ovunque io guardi, non vedo che italiani."

Beginning in late 1911, during the war that ended with the Italian occupation of Libya, hundreds of Libyan prisoners began to be deported to Favignana.
Due to the terrible conditions of detention, many of them died on the island. The death certificates kept at the State Archives in Trapani preserve the memory of their fate.

Among the deportees was the poet Fadil Hasin ash-Shalmani of Misurata, who wrote a short poem in memory of his imprisonment:

"We are in small cells, crowded together,
without sunlight,
locked by locked iron doors.
And wherever I look, I see only Italians."

Il 27 maggio del 1846 veniva ritrovato nella ruota degli esposti di Reggio Calabria un neonato avvolto in un pannolino di tela bianca, che veniva chiamato “Fortunato Guerriero”.
Non sappiamo come sia stata la sua vita ma, se nomina sunt omina, speriamo che questo appellativo gli abbia portato fortuna.

On May 27, 1846, a newborn baby wrapped in a white cloth diaper was found in the abandoned children's wheel in Reggio Calabria. He was named "Fortunato Guerriero" (lucky warrior).
We don't know what his life was like, but, if names are omens, we hope this name brought him good luck.
