Thinking about contraception but not sure where to start? π
If you have questions about contraception, we're here to help.
Our GP, Dr Alexandra McCullough, has a specialist interest in women's health and has been fitting contraceptive coils and implants for over 10 years. During that time, she has inserted more than 250 coils and 50 implants, with experience gained both here in Jersey and at a specialist referral centre in Wiltshire and London.
Here's what Dr McCullough wants you to know:
"Feeling comfortable and informed is just as important as the procedure itself. That's why I like to meet patients before their fitting appointment. It gives us time to discuss your options, answer any questions, complete all the necessary safety checks and consent, and helps avoid any last-minute cancellations.
I also use a range of pain relief options to make the procedure as comfortable as possible, including medication before your appointment to help relax the cervix and reduce inflammation, as well as local anaesthetic during the fitting.
Every coil fitting is different. The vast majority go very smoothly, but occasionally someone's anatomy means a coil isn't the right option. I always work on the basis that we only proceed if we're both happy to do so.
Coils aren't just for contraception. They can also help manage heavy or painful periods and can form part of HRT. Often, one coil can help with more than one concern."
If you'd like to explore your options, Dr McCullough would be delighted to meet with you and help you find the choice that's right for you.
