Yoga began thousands and thousands of years ago in India. It was first brought to the West in the early 1900’s and now you can practice many types of yoga that we have not even heard of in India. In the West yoga is often identified only with what we call asanas (proper exercise), the yoga positions, but in fact yoga is much more than this. There is no doubt that the practice of yoga is of huge be

nefit to our health and wellbeing. However, in India yoga is not about developing a beautiful body but about developing a strong and clear mind and inner calm. At its most basic level this can be understood if we consider how stress affects us. Stress affects people differently, some people become quite withdrawn whilst others become quite aggressive, either way stress unbalances our mind and our true self. Yoga provides a variety of techniques to counter stress and techniques that develop our mind in different ways.
