🌟 Meet Leah | lanel5 🌟

Leah is a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner with more than 16 years of nursing experience and a heart deeply rooted in service.

Leah first joined CHWF in Jamaica this past April, and before that mission was even over, she already felt called to return. Now, she’s coming back for Part 2 of our Hurricane Recovery Mission—not only as a returning volunteer, but also as a member of the planning committee helping bring this next mission to life.

For Leah, Jamaica is personal. With deep Jamaican roots, she witnessed the impact Hurricane Melissa had on her own family and communities across the island. That experience strengthened her desire to use her skills, time, and heart to serve.

A woman of few words, Leah lets her faith and her actions speak for her. Guided by Proverbs 3:5–6, she continues to answer the call to serve wherever God directs her steps.

As we prepare to return to Jamaica, we’re grateful to have Leah serving alongside us once again—this time helping make the mission possible both behind the scenes and on the ground.

Meet Dr. Jeannine Sherwood, PhD, APRN, FNP-BC! | Jeannine Sherwood 💛

Dr. Jeannine Sherwood is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, ANCC Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, and Certified Wound and Ostomy Specialist with more than 25 years of nursing experience. She serves as an Assistant Professor of Nursing at SUNY Downstate College of Nursing and is the Manager of the Wound and Ostomy Department at Mount Sinai Morningside in Harlem, New York.

Throughout her career, Dr. Sherwood has remained committed to meeting people where they are—providing compassionate, patient-centered care while advocating for those whose voices are too often unheard. Her dedication extends beyond the bedside through nursing education, mentorship, and developing the next generation of nurses. She is especially passionate about strengthening the nursing workforce by fostering resilience, empowering others, addressing burnout and moral distress, and cultivating compassion in healthcare.

For Dr. Sherwood, serving on this mission is an opportunity to give back to the land and people she holds dear while reconnecting with the purpose that inspired her to become a nurse. She believes in seeing the unseen, hearing the unheard, and caring for those who are often overlooked. She is honored to serve alongside the Caribbean Health & Wellness Foundation as part of its mission to promote health, healing, and hope throughout Jamaica.

As we prepare to return to Jamaica for Part 2 of our Hurricane Melissa Recovery Mission, we want to introduce you to the communities behind the work.

Flamstead Gardens is a rural farming community in St. James, near Maroon Town, where farming is an important part of everyday life and a source of livelihood for many families. Hurricane Melissa took a significant toll on the area, with farmers losing crops and families facing the difficult work of rebuilding in the months that followed.

The CHWF volunteer team will be on the ground in Flamstead Gardens, partnering with Vaughansfield Primary & Infant School Vaughansfield Primary to host a free Community Health Fair & Recovery Outreach for students, residents and surrounding communities.

Our team will provide FREE health screenings, healthcare consultations, preventive health education, psychosocial support, care packages, school supplies, and connections to additional care.

For us, hurricane recovery doesn’t end when the storm passes. It continues long after—as communities work to rebuild their livelihoods, restore stability, and move forward. ❤️🧡💛

When we met her during our April mission, she shared what life has looked like since. Without a roof protecting her home from the rain, her mattress gets wet. During the day, she puts it outside in the sun to dry—hoping it will be dry enough for her to sleep on that night.

This is what recovery still looks like for some families in Jamaica.

Months after the hurricane, the headlines may have faded, but the impact has not. Families are still living with the devastation left behind still rebuilding, still recovering.

Stories like hers are why Caribbean Health & Wellness Foundation continues to show up.

We’re returning to serve more communities, provide essential health and wellness support, and bring critical supplies to families who continue to feel the effects of Hurricane Melissa.

Her story deserves to be heard. And she is not alone. ❤️🧡💛

🌟 Meet Ingrid | Ingrid Ingysz 🌟

Ingrid is a Registered Nurse and Student Nurse Midwife with a passion for advancing maternal health and improving outcomes for mothers and babies.

Her journey in healthcare began 15 years ago when she enlisted in the Army National Guard as a Healthcare Specialist. Today, as a Labor & Delivery nurse, Ingrid is committed to patient safety, education, advocacy, and compassionate labor support for birthing mothers and their families.

Now entering the final phase of her midwifery education, Ingrid hopes to help address disparities in maternal and neonatal care, with a particular focus on reducing preventable complications and deaths among Black mothers and newborns.

Serving with the Caribbean Health & Wellness Foundation is especially meaningful to Ingrid because of her family roots in Jamaica and the personal impact global challenges have had on people she loves. With a longstanding heart for service, she is proud to bring her nursing experience, compassion, and commitment to CHWF’s work in underserved communities.

When Hurricane Melissa made landfall, 100% of public schools in hurricane-affected areas were forced to close. 🎒

For thousands of children, the storm disrupted more than homes and communities. It disrupted their education, routines, and sense of normalcy.

This October, CHWF returns to Jamaica for Part 2 of our Hurricane Recovery Program, and we’re collecting school supplies to help students return to the classroom ready to learn. ❤️🧡💛

Meet Sakena Kearse, MSW | Sakena🦋💜

Sakena is a Medical Social Worker with a background in Psychology who is passionate about empowering individuals and families through compassionate, person-centered care. In her role, she helps patients navigate complex healthcare systems by connecting them with essential community resources while providing guidance, advocacy, and support during times of illness, recovery, and life transitions.

Her heart for service extends beyond the clinical setting. While volunteering in Malawi, Africa, Sakena gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of culturally responsive care, collaboration, and community-driven solutions. That experience strengthened her commitment to global health and reinforced her belief that meaningful partnerships are at the heart of creating lasting impact.

As a volunteer with the Caribbean Health & Wellness Foundation’s October 2026 Medical Mission Team, Sakena is honored to serve the people of Jamaica by applying her professional expertise while learning from the communities she encounters. She looks forward to building meaningful relationships, supporting sustainable health initiatives, and contributing to a mission rooted in compassion, service, and empowerment.
