When we move better, we live better.

As part of World Physiotherapy Week 2026, the Physiotherapy Department at Percy Junor Hospital had a health fair on Thursday, September 10, 2026, highlighting the importance of preventing and rehabilitating stroke and cardiovascular disease.

With support from the National Health Fund (NHF) and the Manchester Health Department, members of the public accessed free health screenings, including blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol and BMI checks, helping them gain a clearer picture of their health.

The day also featured an educational seminar led by Dr Narine and Dr Jeffrey Miller, who shared practical guidance on recognising the early signs of stroke and heart attack at home, as well as the importance of beginning stroke rehabilitation as early as 24 to 48 hours after diagnosis when medically appropriate.

Physiotherapy is about more than massages. Physiotherapists are movement specialists who use exercise and rehabilitation to help people regain strength, improve function and live more independently.

This World Physiotherapy Week, remember: movement is key.

🎉 Celebrating Health Achievements! 🌟

On Thursday, September 10, 2026, the Manchester Health Department proudly celebrated the achievements of its fourth cohort of the Upbeaters Wellness Programme at Tropics View Hotel.

Throughout the one-year programme, participants made encouraging progress in key areas, including Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Their achievements reflect a strong commitment to physical activity, proper nutrition and healthier lifestyle choices. 💪🏽🥗

The participants received support from a multidisciplinary team comprising physical activity specialists, nutritionists, nurses, community health aides, health promotion officers, mental health professionals and the programme’s clinician, Dr Blair Walters.

🎊 Congratulations to the 2026 Upbeaters! As wellness ambassadors, they are now equipped to promote healthier lifestyle practices in their homes, workplaces, schools and communities.

Physiotherapy is about more than treating pain. It helps people move better, manage non-communicable diseases and regain movement, strength, balance and independence after a stroke.

Renewing Hope in Carisbrook 💙

On Thursday, September 3, 2026, the Southern Regional Health Authority joined the Ministry of Health and Wellness, UNICEF and partner agencies at Carisbrook Primary & Infant School, St. Elizabeth, to bring health, support and hope directly to the community through the Renewed Hope Community Health and Wellness Recovery Fair.

Following the impact of Hurricane Melissa in 2025, residents accessed free health screenings, including blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol checks, while learning more about nutrition, hygiene, physical activity and other essential health topics. Representatives from the Tax Administration Jamaica, the Jamaica Council for Drug Abuse, the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and more agencies also connected residents with valuable services and resources.

The day was made even more meaningful by the strong community turnout, with adults taking charge of their health and children leaving with smiles and care packages.

Together, we are helping communities recover, rebuild and move forward with renewed hope. 💙
