SESAME was pleased to welcome Noha Abdul-Aziz Bawazir, UNESCO Representative to Jordan and Head of Office, accompanied by Partnership Officer Nour Hemici, for a visit to the facility.

The visit was a great opportunity to discuss SESAME’s scientific activities, regional impact, and future perspectives, as well as the long-standing and fundamental role of UNESCO in SESAME’s history.

SESAME was established under the auspices of UNESCO, whose support was instrumental in turning a shared vision into a unique scientific and science diplomacy project for the Middle East. Since its foundation, UNESCO has accompanied SESAME’s growth as an international research centre promoting scientific excellence, collaboration, and dialogue across the region.

We are very grateful for UNESCO’s continued engagement and support of SESAME’s mission.

The FASEM is a recurring biennial advanced-school, rotating across three key thematic areas: Scattering Techniques for Environment & Materials, Life Sciences, and Energy Applications. Its goals are to prepare the future generation of users of large-scale facilities for synchrotron and neutron scattering; develop and strengthen sustainable scientific exchanges between the French and Swedish communities on the use of large-scale facilities, in connection with the forthcoming ESS commissioning; and strengthen the links between institutes in France (ILL, ESRF, SOLEIL) and in Sweden (MAX-IV, ESS).

FASEM 2026, an advanced school will take place March 16–20, 2026 at ILL and ESRF in Grenoble, France, with online access available.

The school is accessible online to anyone who registers using the following link:

A milestone visit highlighting Germany’s growing engagement with SESAME

Allan, Jordan, 18 February 2026. During a state visit to Jordan today, His Excellency Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, took time out to visit the SESAME laboratory north-west of the capital Amman. In November last year, Germany announced its intention to become an Associate Member of SESAME, cementing the country’s already long-standing support for the Laboratory. At the end of his visit, the President signed the Laboratory’s guest book, in the company of SESAME Director Dr Khaled Toukan and young researchers from across the region: “I am fascinated by the succeeding cooperation of so many countries in the Middle East and worldwide. This important work of researchers shows what a treasure international cooperation to the benefit of all of us is. Germany continues to support this place of science in the years to come.”
