【Clinical Observership Program】
Dr. Rathanon Leevongsakorn, a Clinical Care Nephrology Fellow at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, returned to UTH for participating in a Clinical Observership Program in March 2026 at the Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine.
He had participated in the observership program at our Division of Nephrology and Endocrinology two years ago.

He says his clinical journey has solidified his fascination with the complex interplay between critical illness and organ support, particularly renal function in sepsis and, this time, his objective was to further enhance his knowledge with focus on his specialty area for becoming a Critical Care Nephrologist at a public hospital in his hometown.

One of the new experiences for him this time was caring the post-lung transplant patients, which was very few in Thailand. Also, he deepened his perspectives on the essential aspect of “working as a team” consist of multidisciplinary members for providing critical care under the leadership of Professor Kent Doi.

Just like Dr. Leevongsakorn, some of the Residents/Fellows in the past have come back for the second placement opportunity at UTH, which contributed to each of their professional growth further on.

【Delegation’s Visit】
UTH received a delegation of medical professionals from Chi Mei Medical Center, Tainan, Taiwan.

Through the half-day program included academic lectures and engaging discussion with Department’s Chief of the Geriatric Medicine, Osteoporosis Center and Center for International Preventive Medicine, the two sides exchanged views on the importance of integrated medical care and advanced health screenings in an aging society they face.

【Clinical Observership Program】
Department of Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit accepted an international trainee for the clinical observership program for the first time in a while.

Under the mentorship of Department Director and Professor Naoto Takahashi, Dr. Watiya Chamnanchang, a second-year Neonatology Fellow at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand, successfully completed a two-week program. and was able to enhance her skill and knowledge on best practices of neonatal care. Dr. Chamnanchang is committed to advancing neonatal care in her community as well as national neonatal policies across her country.

【Transplantation and Psychiatry】
Professor Kiyoshi Hasegawa of the Divisions of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery and Artificial Organ and Transplantation Surgery and his team met with Dr. Akhil Shenoy, MD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Columbia University; Psychiatric Consultant, Liver and Transplantation Services, New York-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia University Medical Center.

On the occasion of the visit to Japan at the time of blooming of the cherry blossoms, Dr. Shenoy was hoping to better understand cultural and social perspectives over deceased and living donor transplantation in Japan and they exchanged opinions on ethical and regulatory issues as well as the aspects from surgical and psychiatric assessment and follow-up consultations for liver transplantation.

【Fulbright Research Scholar as Invited Faculty at UTH】
Right after the new year, Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery welcomed a prominent physician scientist onboard from the United States - Dr. Anaïs Rameau, Associate Professor and the Director of New Technologies in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College, New York. She has been spending a sabbatical year in Japan on a prestigious U.S. Fulbright Scholarship Program since January.

Host Faculty at the University of Tokyo is Dr. Rumi Ueha, Associate Professor Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery and Director of the Swallowing Center and she has been looking forward to having Dr. Rameau join her team at UT for conducting collaborative research.

Dr. Rameau is highly respected for a large number of publications and research achievements she has committed focusing on health-related digital and AI technologies. She leads advanced research and clinical care in the field of dysphagia and has created the first multi-disciplinary dysphagia clinic in the New York City area.

During her sabbatical year in Japan, Dr. Rameau will further promote advanced research on swallowing CT techniques, oral frailty assessment methods and deepen her knowledge on techniques of surgery performed by Dr. Ueha and her team.

【Clinical Observership Program】
In February, Department of Gastroenterology accepted a clinical observership trainee from the Philippines, Dr. Maria Emilia Adenike Virrey Adedoja, a Senior Internal Medicine resident and Associate Chief Resident at Delos Santos Medical Center, Quezon City, Philippines.

Dr. Adedoja had opportunity to observe clinical procedures at each of the specialized Groups; Group of GI tract diseases, Group of Biliary and Pancreatic disease and Group of Liver diseases, which broadened her knowledge on advanced procedures on EUS and ESD as well as multidisciplinary care.

【Advanced Clinical Training】
Dr. Wang Feng, attending thoracic surgeon at the Beijing Chest Hospital, Capital Medical University, successfully completed a year-long Advanced Clinical Training (ACT) at the Department of Thoracic Surgery headed by Professor Masaaki Sato.

ACT is a permission-based program run by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, Japan where hands-on training is permitted for those who are met by the requirements and qualification.

During the ACT, under the direct guidance by Professor Sato, Dr. Wang had training on preoperative evaluation, surgical procedures, perioperative management, and chronic post-operative care of thoracic surgery, particularly focusing on lung transplantation.

Outside OR, together with other foreign medical professionals on the training at the Thoracic Department, Dr Wang Feng was able to learn advanced surgical skills and expand his specialized clinical knowledge through direct instruction and lectures by Professor Sato.

Dr. Wang Feng expressed heartfelt gratitude for the valuable experiences he had on this training program, which made him grow professionally. His collaboration on relevant clinical research projects with Professor Sato’s team is expected to continue even after he returns.
