【A Long-Awaited Reunion & Launching a New US Book Project with Stephen Brown?】
Just returned to Kyoto, Japan, after a wonderful time conducting seminars and treatments in Sopron, Hungary!
Right after my return, I had a truly special reunion. Yesterday, for the first time in three years, I met up in Kyoto with Stephen Brown, who is based in Seattle and widely known as a leading translator and interpreter bringing Japanese traditional medicine to the world.
Stephen is a vital partner to me. He has translated my publications, such as "the North American Journal of Oriental Medicine", and has served as my interpreter when I teach seminars in the US.
On his way from Oita to Nagoya in Japan, Stephen made a stop in Kyoto. We spent about two hours catching up over coffee at Inoda Coffee near Kyoto Station.
Beyond just updating each other on our lives, we dived into some profound insights from his global perspective:
◆ The True Value of Japan that Locals Take for Granted
"Japan is the longest-enduring country in the world, and it is currently drawing immense attention globally. The incredible history and culture, the safety, the community-minded spirit of caring for others, and the meticulous level of service—what Japanese people consider 'ordinary' is extraordinary to the rest of the world. Japanese people should take greater pride in their heritage."
◆ The Culture of "Teate" (Hands-on Healing) the World Can Learn From
"Whether professional or amateur, Japan has a deeply rooted, everyday tradition of 'Teate' (touch/hands-on healing). This beautiful physical culture is something the Western world could truly benefit from adopting."
Hearing these words from someone with such a profound international perspective made me feel deeply proud of the traditional medicine and bodywork we practice every day.
On top of that, an exciting new vision emerged: a big project to publish a book in the US over the next three years! Talking about the future made the time fly by.
While Stephen and I have an age difference similar to that of a father and son, I feel incredibly grateful to share this mutual respect and to collaborate on creating meaningful content together across generations!
