Embodied Therapy

Embodied Therapy Somatic and Mindful Mental Health for Trauma & Stress. Somatic Experiencing™ Practitioner and LMHC.

Michelle (pronouns: she/hers) is a somatically-trained licensed mental health counselor working in private practice in Tokyo, Japan. She spent the last three years at the U.S Naval Hospital in Okinawa in the Department of Mental Health where she worked with active duty military members and their families in addressing distress and trauma through the means of body-based practices that promote embodiment and resiliency. There she also developed specific clinical programming combining yoga and psychology to help compliment treatments within the substance abuse programs and inpatient units. Michelle also worked for one year with the mental health unit on Kadena Air Base in Okinawa as a graduate student counselor supporting airmen and their families.

Michelle has an extensive 15 year background in yoga and mindfulness teaching in which she has worked with those living with spinal cord injury, brain injury, chronic and life threatening disease, and grief and loss.

Currently in her advanced year of Somatic Experiencing (SE) training, Michelle incorporates in her work principles of Peter Levine's SE modality combined with Polyvagal Theory, Sensory Awareness, Attachment Theory, mindfulness and trauma-informed yoga concepts.

Another emotionally regulating practice is simple mark-making.. This practice needs no artistic or creative experience and when done mindfully can promote somatic connection through rhythm, pattern-making and play. Where this monthly series will be held in Tokyo's Yoyogi Park under the trees, the first one is being offered online in order to avoid the intense summer heat.

Our first session will focus on using PEN + INK + PENCIL on Friday, August 13 10am-11:30am JPN. Curious? That's all you need. For more information: https://www.theslowlifeexperience.com/service-page/mark-making-as-mindful-practice-aug-14?referral=service_list_widget

SUMMER SLOW TIME ☀️
An Online Workshop for Embracing the Slow
Sunday, August 16 9:30-11am (JAPAN)
A FREE facilitated online gathering of shifting our pace to slow time where we will discover slow movement, slow exploration, and slow expression with nature as our inspiration.

Let’s face it, it’s hot out there and in the heart of the summer heat weather may have us quite limited in our ability to get outside and commune with the natural world, causing us to feel trapped and isolated. Slowing down our pace while connecting with ourselves and nature has shown to reduce anxiety and depression, increase mood, and spark motivation.

This online session will be experiential in nature with the invitation to explore your lived space as a living and breathing container. Session will end with an online virtual tea and time to connect with each other.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR: Michelle Pietrzak-Wegner is a long-time mindfulness/somatic movement facilitator, certified Nature & Forest Therapy guide, and internationally certified yoga therapist who specializes in guiding people to slow down, connect with their body, and commune with nature.

This session is offered in kind and is free to those who come with openness and curiosity. Pre-registration required.

I was honored to present and demonstrate Somatic Practices at the 30th Annual conference of the International Mental Health Professionals of Japan (IMHPJ) at Kobe Gakuin University this past weekend. Most meaningful to me as a professional living and working in Japan was the connections made with other helping professionals that come from around the world and the shared common interests we have in supporting our international clients who are living and working in Japan. Cheers to another successful conference for IMHPJ, I am already looking forward to next year!

When the world is continually moving so fast it feels absurd to be invited into slowness. Yet it may be exactly what is needed to traverse the difficult times.

My recent blog most on Befriending Slow:

Slowness feels an extreme counter to our current culture where the norm adheres tightly to a life of multi-tasking, short quick deadlines, and back-to-back scheduling amidst the bombardment of lightning speed information and stimuli from the digital world. When we land in the thick of life struggles....

Our bodies hold our stress, fears, worries. Held chronically during troubling and challenging times, it takes a toll on our well being in profound and possibly damaging ways. Allowing for small little moments of ease and release is important and helpful for sustainability.
