Respiratory effort at either extreme may increase risk, with excessive effort linked to further lung damage and myotrauma and insufficient effort linked to atrophy and dysfunction. Bedside monitoring techniques have supported a framework that integrates ventilation and sedation to enable timely and safe spontaneous breathing.
