RIGHT OF REPLY: CLARIFICATION ON THE MATERNITY INCIDENT OF 9TH JULY 2026

Embu Level 5 Hospital wishes to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident that occurred at our facility on 9th July 2026, involving a group of individuals who forcefully entered the hospital premises, disrupted normal operations, and chanted political slogans.

The patient at the centre of the incident was admitted on Monday, 6th July 2026, as a maternity case and was expected to deliver on 19th July 2026. During her admission, the attending clinical team assessed her condition and determined that she would require a Caesarean section. As part of the standard pre operative preparation, she also required a blood transfusion before the procedure could safely be undertaken.

In line with the Ministry of Health's blood transfusion protocols and standard practice in public health facilities, patients requiring blood transfusion are requested to have compatible relatives or friends donate blood through the Regional Blood Transfusion Centre to replenish the blood that will be used. Blood is not an item that can simply be procured on demand. Its availability depends on voluntary donation and compatibility, as different patients have different blood groups. These are critical medical considerations that must be carefully managed to guarantee safe transfusion.

We wish to categorically state that the patient was never abandoned or denied treatment. She remained admitted throughout, continued receiving quality medical care under close observation by our healthcare professionals, and was not in any immediate life threatening condition. The timing of any medical or surgical procedure is determined solely by the attending clinical team based on professional assessment, established medical protocols, and the patient's condition.

It is regrettable that the incident quickly took on a political tone, with chants of "Wantam" and the presence of known political operatives, giving the impression that the primary objective was to advance a political narrative rather than seek factual information about the patient's care and wellbeing. Healthcare institutions should remain neutral spaces dedicated to saving lives and serving all citizens regardless of political affiliation.

We also note with concern the allegations circulating regarding the alleged lack of drugs, medical tests and other services at the hospital. These claims remain unsubstantiated.

Embu Level 5 Hospital and the Department of Health Services - Embu County remains committed to providing safe, quality and patient centred healthcare to all. We also have a clear protocol for handling complaints on 0722406595 or 071303071

We are pleased to announce another major milestone in strengthening cervical cancer prevention services in Embu County following the successful activation of all three GeneXpert machines for HPV DNA testing. The machines are now fully operational at Embu Level 5 Hospital, Runyenjes Level 4 Hospital and Ishiara Hospital, bringing advanced cervical cancer screening services closer to our communities.

Today, during the Daktari Mashinani medical outreach in Runyenjes, we successfully conducted HPV DNA testing, with samples being processed locally at Runyenjes Level 4 Hospital. This marks a significant achievement in decentralizing diagnostic services and ensuring that women can access timely, high-quality cervical cancer screening closer to where they live.

HPV DNA testing is a more sensitive, accurate and simpler screening method compared to the traditional Pap smear. By activating these GeneXpert platforms, we expect significantly shorter turnaround times for results, enabling earlier diagnosis, prompt clinical management and reducing the diagnostic workload at Embu Level 5 Hospital.

This achievement is a key step towards supporting the World Health Organization's 90-70-90 strategy for the elimination of cervical cancer and reflects our continued commitment to investing in innovative technologies that improve healthcare access, quality and patient outcomes across Embu County.

We encourage all eligible women to take advantage of HPV DNA screening services now available in our facilities. Early detection saves lives, and together, we can make cervical cancer preventable, detectable and treatable.
