Leadership Today: When Power Replaces Purpose
In many parts of the world today, including across much of Africa and beyond, leadership is increasingly being measured by the wrong standards. Instead of service, we celebrate status. Instead of integrity, we reward loyalty to individuals. Instead of competence, we often elevate connections and influence.
Where leadership should inspire trust, it sometimes breeds fear. Where it should unite people around a shared vision, it can become a tool for division and self-preservation.
The troubling measures of poor leadership that have become common include:
❌ Power over Service – Viewing leadership as a privilege to be enjoyed rather than a responsibility to be fulfilled.
❌ Personal Gain over Public Good – Prioritizing individual interests above the needs of citizens, employees, or communities.
❌ Loyalty over Competence – Rewarding those who agree rather than those who can contribute effectively.
❌ Control over Empowerment – Suppressing initiative and independent thinking instead of developing future leaders.
❌ Secrecy over Transparency – Withholding information and avoiding accountability.
❌ Short-Term Popularity over Long-Term Vision – Making decisions for immediate applause while neglecting sustainable progress.
❌ Division over Unity – Exploiting differences for political, social, or organizational advantage.
❌ Blame over Responsibility – Finding scapegoats rather than owning mistakes and learning from them.
The result is often weakened institutions, discouraged talent, lost opportunities, and growing public distrust. When leadership becomes centered on individuals instead of principles, societies and organizations pay the price.
As Plato warned:
"The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men."
A reminder that leadership quality is not only the responsibility of leaders—it is also shaped by what citizens, employees, and communities choose to tolerate, reward and demand.
