Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs. The air sacs may fill with fluid or pus (purulent material), causing cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. A variety of organisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi, can cause pneumonia.

Pneumonia can range in seriousness from mild to life-threatening It is most serious for infants and young children, people older than age 65, and people with health problems or weakened immune systems.

SYMPTOMS

The signs and symptoms of pneumonia vary from mild to severe, depending on factors such as the type of germ causing the infection, and your age and overall health. Mild signs and symptoms often are similar to those of a cold or flu, but they last longer.

Signs and symptoms of pneumonia may include:

Fever, sweating and shaking chills

Cough, which may produce phlegm

Chest pain when you breathe or cough

Shortness of breath

Fatigue

Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

Newborns and infants may not show any sign of the infection. Or they may vomit, have a fever and cough, appear restless or tired and without energy, or have difficulty breathing and eating.

People older than age 65 and people in poor health or with a weakened immune system may have a lower than normal body temperature. Older people who have pneumonia sometimes have sudden changes in mental awareness.

When to see a doctor

See your doctor if you have difficulty breathing, chest pain, persistent fever of 102 F (39 C) or higher, or persistent cough, especially if you're coughing up pus.

It's especially important that people in these high-risk groups see a doctor:

Children younger than age 2 with signs and symptoms

Adults older than age 65

People with an underlying health condition or weakened immune system

People receiving chemotherapy or taking medication that suppresses the immune system

For some older adults and people with heart failure or chronic lung problems, pneumonia can quickly become a life-

***ECTOPIC PREGNANCY***

DEFINITION

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants somewhere other than the main cavity of the uterus. Pregnancy begins with a fertilized egg. Normally, the fertilized egg attaches itself to the lining of the uterus.

An ectopic pregnancy most often occurs in one of the tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus (fallopian tubes). This type of ectopic pregnancy is known as a tubal pregnancy. In some cases, however, an ectopic pregnancy occurs in the abdominal cavity, o***y or neck of the uterus (cervix).

An ectopic pregnancy can't proceed normally. The fertilized egg can't survive, and the growing tissue might destroy various maternal structures. Left untreated, life-threatening blood loss is possible.

Early treatment of an ectopic pregnancy can help preserve the chance for future healthy pregnancies.

SYMPTOMS

At first, an ectopic pregnancy might not cause any signs or symptoms. In other cases, early signs and symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy might be the same as those of any pregnancy — a missed period, breast tenderness and nausea.

If you take a pregnancy test, the result will be positive. Still, an ectopic pregnancy can't continue as normal.

Light va**nal bleeding with abdominal or pelvic pain is often the first warning sign of an ectopic pregnancy. If blood leaks from the fallopian tube, it's also possible to feel shoulder pain or an urge to have a bowel movement — depending on where the blood pools or which nerves are irritated. If the fallopian tube ruptures, heavy bleeding inside the abdomen is likely — followed by lightheadedness, fainting and shock.

When to see a doctor

Seek emergency medical help if you experience any signs or symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy, including:

Severe abdominal or pelvic pain accompanied by va**nal bleeding

Extreme lightheadedness or fainting

Shoulder pain

CAUSES

A tubal pregnancy — the most common type of ectopic pregnancy — happens when a fertilized egg gets st

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a disorder in which the endometrium grows outside your uterine cavity. The endometrium is the tissue which makes up the inside surface of your uterus.

Endometriosis occurs when this lining grows on the ovaries, bowel, and tissues lining your pelvis. It is unusual (but not impossible) for endometrial tissue to spread beyond the pelvic region.

The misplaced endometrial tissue follows the menstrual cycle under the influence of hormonal changes. This means the tissue will grow, thicken, and break down. Over time it will have nowhere to exit and become trapped.

This causes irritation, scar formation, or adhesions (binding of organs by abnormal tissue) with the surrounding tissues. It may lead to severe pain during your periods and possible fertility problems

Causes of Endometriosis

During a regular menstruation, your body sheds the lining of your uterus. This enables menstrual blood to flow from your uterus through the small opening in the cervix and out through your va**na.

Endometriosis often occurs due to a process called retrograde menstruation. This happens when menstrual blood flows back through the fallopian tubes into the pelvic cavity instead of the body.

The displaced endometrial cells then stick to your pelvic walls and surfaces of pelvic organs. They then continue to grow, thicken, and bleed over the course of your menstrual cycle.

Doctors believe the condition may also occur if areas of the abdomen convert into endometrial tissue. This may happen because cells in the abdomen arise from embryonic cells, which can change shape and act like endometrial cells. Why this occurs is unknown.

Recognizing the Symptoms of Endometriosis

Pain is the most common symptom Specifically, this may include:

painful periods

pain in the lower abdomen before and during menstruation

cramps one or two weeks around menstruation

pain following sexual in*******se

discomfort with bowel movements

pelvic or lower back pain that may occur

***BACTIRIA VAGINOSIS***

What is bacterial vaginosis?
Bacterial vaginosis is va**nal condition that can produce va**nal discharge and results from an overgrowth of normal bacteria in the va**na. In the past, the condition was called Gardnerella vaginitis, after the bacteria that were thought to cause the condition.

Bacterial vaginosis Symptom
Bacterial vaginosis is an abnormal va**nal condition that is characterized by va**nal discharge and results from an overgrowth of normal bacteria in the va**na.
Bacterial vaginosis is not dangerous, but it can cause disturbing symptoms.
Symptoms of bacterial vaginosis are va**nal discharge and odor, although 85% of women with the condition experience no symptoms

*****TONSILLITIS*****

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, two oval-shaped pads of tissue at the back of the throat — one tonsil on each side. Signs and symptoms of tonsillitis include swollen tonsils, sore throat, difficulty swallowing and tender lymph nodes on the sides of the neck.

Most cases of tonsillitis are caused by infection with a common virus, but bacterial infections also may cause tonsillitis.

Because appropriate treatment for tonsillitis depends on the cause, it's important to get a prompt and accurate diagnosis. Surgery to remove tonsils, once a common procedure to treat tonsillitis, is usually performed only when tonsillitis occurs frequently, doesn't respond to other treatments or causes serious complications.

SYMPTOMS

Tonsillitis most commonly affects children between preschool ages and the mid-teenage years. Common signs and symptoms of tonsillitis include:

Red, swollen tonsils

White or yellow coating or patches on the tonsils

Sore throat

Difficult or painful swallowing

Fever

Enlarged, tender glands (lymph nodes) in the neck

A scratchy, muffled or throaty voice

Bad breath

Stomachache, particularly in younger children

Stiff neck

Headache

In young children who are unable to describe how they feel, signs of tonsillitis may include:

Drooling due to difficult or painful swallowing

Refusal to eat

Unusual fussiness

When to see a doctor

It's important to get an accurate diagnosis if your child has symptoms that may indicate tonsillitis.

Call your doctor if your child is experiencing:

A sore throat that doesn't go away within 24 hours

Painful or difficult swallowing

Extreme weakness, fatigue or fussiness

Get immediate care if your child has any of these symptoms:

Difficulty breathing

Extreme difficulty swallowing

Drooling

CAUSES

Tonsillitis is most often caused by common viruses, but bacterial infections can also be the cause.

The most common bacterium causing tonsillitis is Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptoco

Herpes Simplex

The herpes simplex virus, also known as HSV, is an infection that causes herpes. Herpes can appear in various parts of the body, most commonly on the ge****ls or mouth. There are two types of the herpes simplex virus. HSV-1, also known as oral herpes, can cause cold sores and fever blisters around the mouth and on the face. HSV-2 is generally responsible for ge***al herpes outbreaks.

What Causes Herpes Simplex?

The herpes simplex virus is a contagious virus that can be passed from person to person through direct contact. Children will often contract HSV-1 from early contact with an infected adult. They then carry the virus with them for the rest of their life.

Infection with HSV-1 can happen from general interactions such as eating from the same utensils, sharing lip balm, or kissing. The virus spreads more quickly when an infected person is experiencing an outbreak. Additionally, it is possible to get ge***al herpes from HSV-1 if the individual has had cold sores and performed sexual activities during that time.

Recognizing the Signs of Herpes Simplex

It is important to understand that although someone may not have visible sores or symptoms, they may still be infected by the virus and may transmit the virus to others. Some of the symptoms associated with this virus include:

blistering sores (in the mouth or on the ge****ls)

pain during urination (ge***al herpes)

itching

Additionally, you may experience many symptoms that are similar to the flu. These symptoms can include fever, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, tiredness, and lack of appetite. HSV can also spread to the eyes, causing a condition called herpes keratitis. This can cause symptoms such as eye pain, discharge, and a gritty feeling in the eye.

*****Chicken pox*****

Also known as varicella, chickenpox is a virus that often affects children. It is characterized by itchy red blisters that appear all over the body. Chickenpox was once so common it was considered a childhood rite of passage. It is well known that once you have chickenpox, you (almost) never have it again.

Since the chickenpox vaccine was introduced in the mid-1990s, cases have declined.

What Causes Chickenpox?

The varicella-zoster virus causes chickenpox. Most cases occur through contact with an infected person. The virus may be contagious several days before blisters appear, and it remains contagious until all blisters have crusted over. It is spread through saliva, coughing, sneezing, and contact with blisters.

Who Is at Risk?

Exposure to the virus through previous infection, vaccination, or immunity passed from mother to newborn (immunity lasts about three months from birth) reduces risk. Anyone who has not been exposed may contract the virus. Risk increases under any of these conditions:

You have had recent contact with an infected individual.

You are under 12 years of age.

You are an adult residing with children.

You have spent time in a school or childcare facility.

Your immune system is compromised due to illness or medications.

Relieving Symptoms

Most individuals diagnosed with chickenpox will be advised to control comfort while waiting for the virus to pass through the system. Parents will be told to keep children out of school and daycare to prevent spread of the virus. Infected adults will also be told to stay home.

*****BED WETTING****

(Bedwetting)

What is a Bedwetting ?
Bedwetting, also called nocturnal enuresis, is the involuntary passage of urine (urinary incontinence) while asleep. Inherent in the definition of bedwetting is satisfactory bladder control while the person is awake.

Bedwetting Symptom
The fundamental problem for children with primary bedwetting is the inability to recognize messages of the nervous system sent by the full bladder to the sleep arousal centers of the brain while asleep.

RISK FACTORS

Pneumonia can affect anyone. But the two age groups at highest risk are:

Children who are 2 years old or younger developing

People who are age 65 or older

Other risk factors include:

Chronic disease. You're more likely to get pneumonia if you have asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or heart disease.

Weakened or suppressed immune system. People who have HIV/AIDS, who've had an organ transplant, or who receive chemotherapy or long-term steroids are at risk.

Smoking. Smoking damages your body's natural defenses against the bacteria and viruses th

*******GOITER*******

DEFINITION

Goiter (GOI-tur) is an abnormal enlargement of your thyroid gland. Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck just below your Adam's apple. Although goiters are usually painless, a large goiter can cause a cough and make it difficult for you to swallow or breathe.

The most common cause of goiter worldwide is a lack of iodine in the diet. In the United States, where the use of iodized salt is common, a goiter is more often due to the over- or underproduction of thyroid hormones or to nodules that develop in the gland itself.

Treatment depends on the size of the goiter, your symptoms and the underlying cause. Small goiters that aren't noticeable and don't cause problems usually don't need treatment.

SYMPTOMS

Not all goiters cause signs and symptoms. When signs and symptoms do occur they may include:

A visible swelling at the base of your neck that may be particularly obvious when you shave or put on makeup

A tight feeling in your throat

Coughing

Hoarseness

Difficulty swallowing

Difficulty breathing

RISK FACTORS

Goiters can affect anyone. They may be present at birth and occur at any time throughout life, although they're more common after age 40. Some common risk factors for goiter include:

A lack of dietary iodine. People living in areas where iodine is in short supply and who don't have access to iodine supplements are at high risk of goiter.

Being female. Because women are more prone to thyroid disorders, they're also more likely to develop goiters.

Your age. Your chances of developing a goiter increase with age.

Medical history. A personal or family history of autoimmune disease increases your risk.

Pregnancy and menopause. For reasons that aren't entirely clear, thyroid problems are more likely to occur during pregnancy and menopause.

Certain medications. Some medical treatments, including immunosuppressants, antiretrovirals, the heart drug amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone, others

HYPERTENSION

High blood pressure is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease.

Blood pressure is determined both by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure.

You can have high blood pressure (hypertension) for years without any symptoms. Even without symptoms, damage to blood vessels and your heart continues and can be detected. Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke.

High blood pressure generally develops over many years, and it affects nearly everyone eventually. Fortunately, high blood pressure can be easily detected. And once you know you have high blood pressure, you can work with your doctor to control it.

SYMPTOMS

Most people with high blood pressure have no signs or symptoms, even if blood pressure readings reach dangerously high levels.

A few people with high blood pressure may have headaches, shortness of breath or nosebleeds, but these signs and symptoms aren't specific and usually don't occur until high blood pressure has reached a severe or life-
