WHY HIV TRANSMISSION THROUGH ORAL S*X AND NOT KISSING?
Tommorow being a public holiday let me wish my muslim brothers a happy eid al adha in advance and reiterate that we are celebrating this with you .
Now being kenyans and a holiday wr ate known to celebrate at levels that is only appeasing us and therby violating lots of rules of engagement thereby signifying majority who will be exposed knowingly or unknowingly to s*xually transmitted infections the biggest scare in the category being HIV AIDs.
Now we must remember HIV is transmitted through body fluids mainly blood, semen and vaginal secretions through s*x, oral s*x ,needle stick injuries, sharing of needles for drug addicts and many other routes.
Today our focuss is on ORAL s*x and why it easily transmiitts HIV and not on deep kissing except only when their is bleeding in the mouth or mouth ulcers thougj still the transmission rate remain zero to none at all.
HIV transmission depends on 2 things:
1. Amount of virus present
2. Ability of the virus to survive
Now:
Deep kissing:
Saliva :-
Has very low HIV load
Saliva is heavily hypotonic (very low salt). Fluids that carry HIV like blood or semen are isotonic.
When HIV-infected immune cells hit your saliva, the drastic drop in salt concentration causes those cells to rapidly swell and burst within seconds.
saliva contains antiviral enzymes/proteins
constant washing/dilution effect = HIV struggles to survive or infect
Saliva also contains the main MVP enzyme in our saliva doing the heavy lifting is SLPI (Secretory Leukocyte Protease Inhibitor). It essentially blocks the virus from binding to host cells. The mucosal defense system is brilliant.
Furthermore, HIV relies on infected fluids to transmit. HPV and Herpes spread via direct mucosa-to-mucosa (skin-to-skin) friction. They embed themselves directly into the basal epithelial cells through microscopic tears in the mouth, completely bypassing the saliva trap.
Oral s*x:
Oral s*x carries low but non-zero risk (higher than kissing).Risk is much lower than vaginal or a**l s*x, but not zero - especially receptive oral s*x (mouth on pen*s/vagina/anus) with ej*******on, if the receiving partner has mouth sores, bleeding gums, or other STIs that cause inflammation/ulcers.
Exposure to semen/vaginal fluid/blood is much higher viral concentration so easier entry through tiny oral cuts/ulcers
During deep kissing, pure saliva dominates. The hypotonic hammer fires immediately. But mix in semen during oral s*x and the protection collapses: the isotonic fluid shields the infected cells from lysis, allowing transmission.
That’s why deep kissing is considered essentially safe unless blood is involved.
Then this calls for change in behaviour to really curb this transmission.
This may include;
1. Partner testing / selftesting
2. Pre exposure prophylaxis use.
3. Post exposure prophylaxis.
These three methods suffice as oral s*x one cant use other methods as condoms.
However the limitation here is that other infections like HPV and other s*xually transmitted infections are still rife and readily infects you.
Let be vigilant and stop the spread if HIV abd other STDs.
I hope these elaborately explains these two.mysteries.
