DR. NICHOLUS KITUNGULU VISITS VTRH

Vihiga County Executive Committee Member for Health, Dr. Nicholus Kitungulu, today paid an impromptu visit to Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital (VTRH) to assess operations and get an update on service delivery at the facility.

During the visit, Dr. Kitungulu toured the Laboratory Department and the Blood Transfusion Unit, where he assessed ongoing activities and the provision of essential services to patients.
He also inspected the ongoing final touches at the new VTRH Hospital Plaza, which is nearing completion.

The visit provided an opportunity to appreciate the progress being made at VTRH and identify areas requiring continued support to enhance quality healthcare services for the people of Vihiga County. We the VTRH family,.had the privilege of hosting Dr. Allyson Bear, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Jhpiego, who paid me a courtesy call at our facility accompanied by the Vihiga governor HE Dr Wilber Khasilwa Otichilo.

Our discussions centered on the tremendous progress we have made in maternal, newborn and child healthcare programs at VTRH. This progress is a testament to the strong partnership between the County Government of Vihiga and Jhpiego through the The Momentum Country and Global Leadership (MCGL) project.

Through this partnership, our healthcare workers have benefitted from various capacity-building and training programs, strengthening their skills and contributing significantly to the reduction of maternal and child mortality in the County.

We also received essential medical equipment from Jhpiego-MCGL project, greatly enhancing the quality and accessibility of maternal and child healthcare services.

We sincerely appreciate Dr. Allyson Bear for the visit and generous donation of additional equipment, which will further strengthen maternal and child health services in our County.

We look forward to deepening this partnership as we work together to improve health outcomes and ensure better healthcare for mothers and children in Vihiga County.

A major milestone for healthcare in Vihiga County! 🎉
Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital has taken another significant step forward with the arrival of Dr. Beda Mubatsi Kundu Neurosurgeon. Dr. Kundu brings specialized neurosurgical services closer to the people of Vihiga and the wider Western Kenya region.
This is a huge boost to the hospital's capacity to manage complex neurological and neurosurgical conditions while reducing the need for patients to travel far in search of specialized care.

A Successful 5-Day Surgical Camp at VTRH.

It was five days of rigorous and life-changing medical operations at the Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital (VTRH) theatres, as the Operation International Surgical Camp successfully came to an end.

The camp was truly one of its kind, with the dedicated surgical team successfully operating on 50 clients suffering from various conditions, including fibroids, fistula, myomectomy-related conditions, cysts, ovarian tumours, and conditions requiring permanent contraception procedures.*

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Operation International team from Los Angeles for their commitment, expertise and selfless service to the people of Vihiga.

Special recognition goes to our local surgical team, led by Dr. Kazungu Koba and Dr. Maureen Okango, for their excellent collaboration and dedication in ensuring the success of the camp.

Together, through partnership and teamwork, we continue to transform lives and strengthen access to quality specialised healthcare at VTRH.

Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo today received a team of 19 Medical Professionals from Operation International, led by their President, Diana Friend, who are in Vihiga County to conduct a Free Obstetrics and Gynaecology Surgical Camp at Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

This year's medical mission places special emphasis on skills transfer, training and surgical knowledge exchange alongside the provision of life-changing medical services.
The team will perform a range of specialized procedures, including myomectomy, cystectomy, laparoscopic hysterectomy, fistula repair and tubal ligation.

Speaking during the reception, Governor Ottichilo noted that this is the third consecutive year that Vihiga County has partnered with Operation International. He encouraged residents to take full advantage of the free surgical camp, emphasizing that the procedures being offered would ordinarily cost thousands of shillings.

The Governor further revealed that the County Government is making significant strides in positioning Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital as a Centre of Excellence. He announced that the Department of Health Services is developing a structured framework for collaboration with Operation International, including the establishment of a long-term partnership, a research centre and a telemedicine centre to enhance specialized Healthcare services in the County.
